Greetings. I'm looking for a good starting point for 458 Lott loads using H4895 powder, and preferably CCI 250 primers. I'm hoping to load 500 grain Barnes Triple Shocks, and 500 grain cast bullets from a Lee 459-500-3R mold. I've seen a few loads with 4895, but they fail to specify an OAL. Also, if anyone has any crazy ideas for using the Lott for Elk and Bear hunting, I'd love a starting point for bullet weight and type.

When I had my Lott, I just started at maximum 458WM loads and worked upwards. Cheers... Con

OAL does depend on the firearm, granted. I've seen minimum OAL listed with most of the other rifles and pistols I load for, and just want to be as sure as possible about safety. This is the biggest round I've laoded, and just want to be cautious. Thanks for the link. It is extremely useful.

You got the Barnes reloading manual? If not, here is the loading data for the 500 grain bullets listed in the #3 manual. .458 Lott Primer: CCI 250 Either 500 grain XFB or 500 grain Solid H4895 Charge Weight: 74.0 grains Velocity: 2176 fps Maximum Charge Weight: 79.0 grains Velocity: 2323 fps I don't know how the use of Triple Shocks will affect min/max limits.

I did get the Barnes data. I'm just used to seeing OAL, and wanted to get some additional advice, especially from someone who had used the data. I'm loading a CZ 550 American Safari.
