I have never turned necks and was wondering if someone had the time to explain how it is done and the best eqiupment for the job? This will be on a low volume job. I do reload some, but would it just be better to farm this job out? Is there anyone who does this? Thanks, ED

I have the Forster set up myself. Necker Works good for me. Biggest thing to remember is "DON'T TURN THE WHOLE NECK!" you only want to take the "fat" off. ______________________ Smedley ______________________ From Audacity of Hope: 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.' I have the RCBS setup and it does a wonderful job. Follow what has been said and just even up the thickness. My necks have a small area on one side that the cutter does not touch. All you want is an even thickness unless you are forming cases from some other case and the necks are too thick.

I'm interested in neck turning as well. Do I need any special kind of measuring equipment, or how do you tell how much to cut? Do you need to measure the case neck before and as you are cutting, or how do you know when to stop?

You will need a ball head micrometer to measure neck wall thickness. I am looking for one myself and Mitutoyo is one manufacturer. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Thanks for the info. One more quick question: Is this worthwhile on a factory rifle and will I see any noticeable change in accuracy, or is it more beneficial to custom bench rest rifles? I don't want to waste my time trying to polish a turd if its not going to make much of a difference on my factory chamber.

My friends at the range that shoot benchrest rifles say that if the chamber is not custom made tight then don't waste your time. I shoot factory rifles that have been bedded and barrels floated but chambers standard and I shoot .350 groups. I do not turn necks and agree that it would be a waste of time without a custom chamber.

Thanks I was interested in doing it but I think I'll invest in a neck sizer dies for my rifles instead.
