After years of reloading handgun and shotgun I am finally taking the plunge and getting a press kit today. I want to work up loads for my Sauer 202 in .300 Weatherby. Would really appreciate good suggestions. I am looking to use this load for a Nov 07 Colorado Mule Deer hunt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Currently thinking Accubonds or TSX...

thanks in advance,

Sean Browne

IMR-4064 is way to quick to be an optimum powder in 300 Weatherby, try RL-25 and Retumbo.

My Sako M-75 Hunter liked this formula at 200yds:

Back off that charge to start, my Sako 30's have been a little long of throat and will usually take a bit more powder.................DJ

In my 300 Weatherby I get the best velocity from IMR 7828. This is with a 24 inch barrel.

RL 22 gives me the best accuracy, but sacrifices about 80 to 100 f.p.s. off the top velocity I can get with IMR 7828.

The 4831 powders, either IMR or Hodgdon, also work well. I agree that 4064 is much too fast burning for optimal results in this cartridge.

I got the best accuracy from the Nosler 200 grain Accubond bullet. I think that bullet would be more than suitable in this cartridge for any big game animal in North America, and most of the world.

Weatherby cases: 215 primers
IMR7828 84gr. Nosler part 180 3220fps
WC867 88gr. Barnes 168 xxx 3315fps
H4831 86gr. Barnes 168 xxx 3340fps
IMR7828 85gr. Horn. 180 SP 3230fps
IMR4831 79gr. Horn. 180 SP 3150fps
IMR7828 85gr. Swift 180 Scir 3202fps

These are shot from a custom Enfield with a 28" barrel. All shot within 1". It took almost 200rd. shot to develope these. More vel. was obtained but sacrificing accuracy. The Barnes triple shock were the most accurate with all powders.I was able to get over 3500fps. with the 165 Hornady's but they were over 2" at 100yd.Good luck with your new rifle,Mark

I currently use:
85 grains IMR-7828
Fed. 215 Magnum primer
Weatherby cases
180 gr. Nosler partition
Can't remember the O.A.L but it is long enough to fit in the magazine and that is all.
I am getting 3220 out of it like 35404 above. Its a lee load, as in dead-lee.

I really appreciate everyone that's taken the time to respond. I am getting my rock chucker set up today and I'll let everyone know how it goes! Haven't decided which way to yet, 165 or 180 and still leaning towards TSX or accubond but possibly failsafes...

thanks!

Sean, I would try the TSX's and Accubonds before I tried the Failsafes. They may quit making the Failsafes for one. For some reason the Failsafes have shot great in a couple 30 cal Sako's I've tried them in but I've had better luck with TSX's and Accubonds in other rifles. Unless you are going to hunt pretty heavy game the Failsafes IMO even though they are really good in my Sako are 3rd choice here...................DJ

I like IMR 7828 and H1000 under 200 gr. Partitions. I've used Rem., Weatherby, cases and currently am using Federal cases. And I have always used CCI 250 primers. I don't list my max loads but I do get right at 3100 fps with both of these powders and this bullet. Start with 78 grs. for 7828 and 80 grs. with H1000, work up slowely keeping a keen eye for pressure signs. I consider a chronagraph a must when you get into maximum load territory. I haven't experimented with many lighter bullets but Weatherby Factory 180 gr. Partitions push 3250 out of my rifle.

My .300 Wby is a custom job with a short throat. I have had the best luck with IMR 7828 and 200 gn. Partitions and TSX's. My favorite load is 80 grains of 7828 in Norma brass with a Fed 215 magnum match primer behind a 200 gn. TSX @ 3060 fps. This load will shoot under 1/2 inch in my rifle.
