Has anyone used Vihtavuori N550 in a 338-06. I'm looking for load data for 210 and 225 grain bullets. Any help is appreciated!

My best results for the 338/06 with 200 and 210 gr bullets have been with H414. H205 was identical except was an extruded powder, and was discontinued. I did try 4064 and 4320. Both were satisfactory, but I got slightly more velocity with 414. Accuracy was good with all three. I never tried any of the Reloader powders.

All the following loads were developed using CCI 250 primers, and FA 60 Match Brass.
200 gr Speer Sp 54 gr 4064 2758fps
"" 54 gr 4320 2736
"" 55 gr 4320 2775 bolt lift stiff I consider this and the next load too hot
'' 57 gr 4320 2877 bolt lift stiff

200 gr Speer SP 56 gr H414 2577
"" 58 gr H414 2607
"" 62 gr H414 2735
"" 64 gr H414 2806 Pressure OK I did not go any higher.

210 Nosler Part 63 gr H414 2758
"" 64 gr H414 2800 Pressure OK

225 Horn Sp 62 gr H205 2680 Note that this is the H 205 and not N 205.

250 Nosler 62 gr H 414 2587 Probably max
"" 62 gr N 204 2528

275 gr Speer 51 gr H 205 2205
53 gr H 205 2262 Bolt lift is stiff
"" 60 gr N 205 2320
"" 58 gr H 4831 2290 OK

I haven't got my 338.06 rebarrel back, but my research suggests that .308 powders work well.N-550 has been called the best 308 powder, besides that is what I have.Ask VihtaVuori, they are great to deal with.

While we're on the subject of Vihtavouri powders does any one have a pet load for 35 Whelen using N140 (or others)250 grain bullets. Currently I'm using 54 grains and its only running 2200 fps (no pressure signs) and rather than just keep bumping it up I thought I'd ask the rest of the world

I tried to use the web form on the Vihtavuori web site to ask this question and I haven't received a reply. Hopefully someone has experimented with this combination.

I used N 550 in my 35 whelen ackley improved, and it worked well with 250 gr bullets. I would pressume that it should also work well in the 338-06.

Yep. My numero uno, all around load for the 338-06 uses the 210 gr Partition over VV N-550 powder in Winchester 30-06 brass. Start at 60 grs and carefully work up. Mine safely goes 2820 fps in a 22" barrel and is very accurate. It has worked well on elk and nilgai for me. Interestingly enough I have a friend that shoots factory 338 Win Mag Federal Premiums with the 210 gr Partition and gets exactly the same velocity with his 24" barrel. Sure shows how "slow" current factory loads can be...
