Just traded for a Cooper model 22 6.5/284, don't have any good starting accuracy loads for the 142 gr SMK. any good starting loads would be appreciated.

You need to check at 6mm/BR.com in their big bore forum (6.5 and up) http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/mb/6mmbr?forum=12200

Those guys know that cartridge better than anyone, I'll bet.

Since I don't know how long throated your 6.5 X 284 is I won't recommend any specific powder charges, but the following powders have been proven performers in the 6.5 X 284:

H4350
H4831 SC
RL-22

H4350 is my favorite followed by H4831 SC. Hope this helps some. H4350 was the powder used as well by winner of the F class national championships this year in a 6.5 X 284. Several other top competitors used that powder as well in there 6.5 X 284. It works!

What Papa says is close to gospel. My 6.5/284 thrives on the IMR 4831, and R22 with Sierra's 142, and F210 match in turned and fitted Winchester brass. I couldn't get quite the velocity I wanted with the 4350, though the SD's were single digit. My barrel is a 1 in 9" Hart, fitted and smithed by them finished to 28". Initial load development had 3 shot groups averaging under 1/4 MOA, and velocity of jus over 3,000 ft/sec's. It is the most awesome rifle I own for distance and downrange energy. This is one under rated cartridge.

Don't overlook the new IMR7828ssc, it's a nice match in the short case & should give top vel. w/ good accuracy. It's just a bit slower than RL22 & you can get more in the case.
