I have a new Rem 700 Mtn rifle in .280 Rem. I was wondering what people think of the cartridge and what sort of loads people think work best. Any comments are appreciated.

As a member of a few fan clubs; .338-06, .375 H&H, and the .280 Rem I am probably expected to reply to this. I have two, a 26" Rem 700 in an HS stock and a stock Wby ultra lt wt with a 24" barrel. I have taken the Rem to Africa twice and have taken bushbuck and blesbok up to black wildebeest with it. I have also used it here in MT on deer, antelope and elk. Other than the blk wildebeest (175 partition) ALL of my game have been killed with 150 partitions starting at 3050 fps. A flat shooting load and the 150 partition retains enough weight to kill well. One should probably use 160's or even 175's on elk or any of the truly big stuff but the 150's have worked well.
Reloader 19 or IMR-4831 seem to be the best powders for a good blend of velocity yet accurate too. I use standard primers and either WW or RP cases.
Among factory loads the Federal Premiums with the 150 partitions rival my handloads for velocity and accuracy, though they are a bit more expensive. I have three other boxes of Federals from the high energy to Premiums with 140 Trophy Bonded bullets, haven't tested them yet.
The .280 Rem is IMHO a very good round fully capable of taking anything the average antelope, black bear, deer or elk hunter is going to be presented here in the lower 48. I do prefer thirty caliber for elk, but have surely taken them with the .280 Rem.

I have a Weatherby LT in .280 Remington with a 24" barrel. I have tried RE-19, IMR4831, H4350, H450, H4831, and IMR7828. Bullets have ranged from 130 gr Speers to 160 gr Nosler Partitions. By far, the most accurate load in my rifle has been 58.0 grains of IMR7828, Fed 210M primers, Remington brass and the 160 grain Nosler Partitions. This is near the MAX load listed in the Nosler book, so the usual CAUTION, start low and work up. Velocity in my rifle was 2857 fps. Nosler says you can get 2900+ fps w/ their max load.

i have a couple of winchester mod.70s in 280 and love them. both shoot 160 grain speer bullets well (about .75+/- at 100 yds) using 51.5 grains of imr4350 and fed 210m primers. one of them really does well with 150 grain speer bullets with 54.0 grains of imr4350 .
