I had a friend give me some 165gr GMX's to try in my .300 Winnie since the length if the bullet wasn't being friendly with his .308. I'm using Federal nickels, WLRM's and H1000. I couldn't find GMX specific data in my books so I looked at a few 165gr/H1000 loads including data on the 165gr Barnes XBT. They listed a starting load as 79gr of H1000 so I dropped mine to one set of rounds at 78gr to run over the chrohny and another at 78.5gr. I was hoping it would be enough of a drop in the charge to give me breathing room on pressure but I noticed when I seated the bullet it "crunched" as if slightly compressing the load. This was with the powder sitting even with the bottom of the case mouth and seated to 3.40 which is the longest my magazine will allow. I'm not suprised at the compression as these bullets are noticeably longer but should I have dropped more in charge weight or will I be ok? I didn't do the standard 10% below because I was starting at below book minimum already. I'm eventually looking for 3100fps. Was this a safe and fair start?

I run 83 grains with a 220 grain RN with Zero problems, and yeah it is over book max, but does just fine..

I mailed in a few boxes of 165 GMX's also for my 30-378. Huntin buddy just changed from TSX's to GMX's and claims they work better, penetrate deeper, cost less; so he badgered me into giving them a try also. My buddy is using 103 grains of RL22 which isn't way over.

Well here are the chrohny results and they are a bit interesting...

1st: 3 Rounds, 78gr H1000 (1gr UNDER BOOK MINIMUM), WLRM, Federal nickel cases, 165 GMX, OAL 3.40, FPS= 3157,3180,3168 (3168 FPS average)

2nd: 3 Rounds, 78.5gr H1000 (0.5gr UNDER BOOK MINIMUM), WLRM, Federal nickel cases, 165 GMX, OAL 3.40, FPS= 3157,3177,3165 (3166 FPS average)

3rd: 3 Rounds, 79.0gr H1000 (BOOK MINIMUM), WLRM, Remington brass cases, 165 GMX, OAL 3.40, FPS= 2832,2877,2889 (2866 FPS average)

4th: 3 Rounds, 79.5gr H1000 (0.5 OVER BOOK MINIMUM), WLRM, Remington brass cases, 165 GMX, OAL 3.40, FPS= 2878,2905,2916 (2901 FPS average)

So as I went up in powder charges my FPS dropped. At least with the change from nickel to brass cases. I measured capacity with water and the Federal nickels were 1gr of water less capacity but I wouldnt think this would up the FPS by 250+ would it? Is there another variable with nickel cases I'm missing? Do they have substantially more neck tension? The bullet wasnt any harder to seat that I noticed. I used the nickel, brass mix as I had them handy immediately as I was loading. I think I shoulda picked one brand of case and stuck with it, but then again I like knowing there is a GREAT difference between the plated and non-plated brass, at least in this case. I hope the more educated and expeirenced handloaders can help me with this!

My main concern with the GMX's was that they would create higher pressure due to their long shank. I admit I took the advice of a friend who loaded them in his .308 and had pressure issues to heart with my .300 as a reason to be cautious. I have since gone to Hornady's website and noted that they list them as being able to use regular book data.

I have loaded more test rounds in 80.0gr, 80.5gr, and 81.0gr in Winchester non-plated cases this time and will post results when I get them over the chrohny. My goal is 3200 FPS. The Winchester cases came to the same water capacity as the Remingtons I have btw.

Thanks all! Hope this is informitave to someone and I appreciate all the help!

Is there any chance in heck that something happened to the scale between loadings? I've shot plenty of 300 win mag and something like this just doesn't happen. (Unless there was alien interference of some sort)

I loaded and charged them all within a few minutes of each other and didnt notice any errant readings... I'm also a stickler to the 1/10 grain exact in powder charges. The only variable besides powder charge was the plated/non-plated so I don't think the charge weight was an issue.

Did the inviromenttal condictions change. Is it possible that there was a mix-up in plasement of the rounds causing the data to be reversed stranger things have happened.

According to Hodgdon reloading manual they used a WLR primer for the 300mag 165gr with H-1000 and top velocity was 3117fps with 84gr.

Barnes used a max of 80gr/H-1000 with their 165/168gr TSX bullet max velocity 3054fps and they used Fed 215 primer.
