I was wondering if anyone has tried reloads with the Hornady V-Max 100gr. bullets with a 270WSM?

Been seeing wolves almost everytime out for coyotes, and was thinking of giving this combo a try.

What powders would be reccomended, and what would the expected velocities be? I heard somewhere that the Speers Varmint 90gr. bullets come apart @ velocities over 3500 ft/sec.

I'll be shooting this in my Tikka T3 LS 270WSM.

Thanks for the help.

MP, shot some of these at the range, no on game performance experience. Don't recall the charge, mid range off one of my loading pamphlets--no 100 gr data in any of my manuals, velocities in the 3400 range (+/- 75 fps) groups were excellent. I used Win 760 powder--that and IMR 4350 and the H 4831's all work well for me in my .270 WSM's--I usually find better accuracy for my WSM's with a little MORE jump to the lands..... I would think the 100 gr pill would be pretty devastating at those velocities, but I have seen some pretty big wolves--I guess I would be thinking something more like a 130 gr, but if you like the lighter pill since your standard fare is yotes, I wouldn't be afraid to shoot a wolf with it.

Good Luck--Don

I have a sweet load with Retumbo and 140gr. Accubonds, but they make one hell of a hole on a coyote. I want to do a full mount with the wolf, so I thought the 100-110gr. bullet might be better. Thanks for the info!

Unless you are going to cut way back on the velocity, the 100-110 grain bullets are going to be even more destructive than the 140 grain ABs. If you want to minimize damage, load a heavier, stouter bullet at moderate velocity. It will exit, of course, but you won't get the grapefruit-to-volleyball sized exits that some of the others can cause.

There is a 110 gr .277" VMax. I have not shot them in the WSM but only in the old 270. They are very accurate and will do over 3300 fps from a 24" tube.

I used RL 15 in the 270 Win. In the WSM 4350 might be fine.

For varmints hunting with the 270 WSM I am using the 140 Ballistic Tip deer load starting at about 3175. The VMax would richocet less.

Try a Sierra Matchking or a TSX if you don't want much expansion. Either that or keep the velocity down some.

I have had pretty good luck with both the Sierra and Speer 90 gr HP in my .270WSM using IMR-4350 and Accurate XMR-4350. Velocity was around 3400 to 3500 fps at 66.0 gr of powder. They could probably be pushed to 3600 fps or better if you wanted to load max. Those max loads at close range would make a major mess out of any coyote or wolf. If you want to preserve more of the pelt, a partiton or TSX might be better. Course, you might have to track it a ways.

Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.
