beer40 gr. of H4895 should be a safe starting load. 43.5gr is listed for the 200gr. bullets. fishingroger

Well, you didn't ask this and no one else has said it but I will. 4895 is a poor choice for that bullet in that cartridge, it's much to fast a powder.

4350, either of them, is a LOT better for the heavier -06 bullets.

What Jim said. With a 220gr bullet, 4350 or 4831 would be better numbers or their equivalent in RL powders (RL 19,22, and 25). This is a really heavy bullet for a 308 bore.

Hear are some recommendations for powders more suitable to the 220gr bullets. THESE ARE ALL MAX LOADS AND YOU SHOULD START 10% BELOW MAX AND WORK UP!:

760/414 52gr
WLR Primer
WW case
2400

IMR 4831 54gr
WLR
ww case
2375

RL 19 56gr
WLR
WW case
2400

Win Magnum Rifle 58gr
WLR
WW case
2400

4831SC 60gr
WLR
WW case
2450

RL22 58gr
WLR
WW Case
2500

RL 25 58gr
WLR
WW Case
2450

The 200gr 308 Bullet maybe better balanced and provide a better overall combination of velocity and weight plus being available in spitzers as well as RN. Kudude

This load from Roger is not too bad.....

Hodgdon however does not list that powder for the 220 grain bullet for the reasons previously stated.

H-4831 is so much better burn rate that the 200 grain bullets exit the muzzle at nearly 300'/sec faster under the same pressure.

Use Roger's info for about 2,200'/sec velocity or change powders. It's up to you.

popcornThe information and advice given you is correct. With the H-4895 you're going to get 2350 ft.Lbs. of energy , a bit less recoil and muzzle blast. Using 4350 or 4831 you can safely get over 3000 ft. Lbs. of energy. That is one big difference. If your intent is big game they will know the difference but than too the 30-40 performance has a good history. beerroger
