I have never loaded anything for the 30-06, this will be the first. My uncle would like for me to load him up some rounds for whitetail hunting in Pennsylvania. Shots will be no more then 200yds. and as close as mabe 20yds. What is a good powder bullet combo? I have imr4064, H4831, and imr3031 on hand. The 4064 is the best thing for my dads 308 and the H4831 is what i use in my 7mag. any suggestions are appreciated. Ryan

My hunting load for my 30-06 is
Sierra 150 gr. SPBT
58.5 grs. IMR 4350
Seated .005 off lands
This is in a Savage 22" barrel
I get .75 MOA with this load and have shot deer out to 300 yds with it and never had one take a step. )
I tried H4831 and could not get quiet the accuracy with it. Reloader 19 is my second choice for this load.
As with any gun you may have to try several different loads till you find the "majic" one.
Hope you find it, Good luck and good shooting. *Nut*

I use Nutoys` load; 58.5 IMR4350 with a WLR primer topped with a Hornady 150 gr SP. This is a very accurate load in my Sauer 200 and MRI. This is a warm load in my MRI so work up to it. I have used 50 gr of 4064 with so-so results in both rifles but found the accuracy wasn`t up to 4350 loads.
56gr of 4350 under a 180 gr Hornady or Nosler BT also gives good results but I prefere 150s for whitetail.

In all reality, under the conditions you specified, any bullet from 110 grains in weight, and up, will take a PA whitetail.

I've taken many in PA using a 6mm with 85 grain bullets...

Hey Redneck,
I am the DRL (designated reloader) at our camp here in MS. Everybody at our camp that shoots my .30 cal reloads shoots a Nosler Ballistic tip 150 gr. with great results, from 50+ deer kills over the last few years.
For my 30-06 buddies I load IMR 4350. The Nosler reloading manual states max at 59.0 gr. I use 58.0 gr in various guns without any signs of pressure problems. The deer we shoot range from 90-120lb Does to 110-200 lb Bucks. Penetration and expansion have never been a problem. Usually a little hole in and a big hole out. Exeptions may be a gut shot deer with not alot of expansion, or a deer shot end to end with no exit wound. But I still dont think you can find a better suited bullet without sacrificing on one or the other (penetration vs expansion)
Good Luck Sport

Use a 165gr bullet with 48grs of IMR-4064, you will get 2700fps, and this is accurate in any 30-06 I've seen. I like the Hornady BT they kill very well, if you have some 4895 try 46.5grs.

I have found 54.5 grains of Rel-15 with the 125 gr. bullet in my 30-06 to be deadly on deer out to 200 yards. Many shooters use IMR-4064 and IMR-4350 powder in the 06 but other powders will produce satisfactory results in the 06. My 06 also will post great groups using IMR-4895 powder with the 150 gr. bullet. Rel-15 and IMR-4895 will give me 1/2" three shot groups at 100 yards in my 06.
Deer are thin skinned animals and you just don't need to use bullets heavier than 150 grains to harvest them cleanly. In fact the 125 grain bullet at over 3000 FPS from the 06 works great on deer size game. The 125 gr. bullet striking the heart lung area is a dealy combination on deer, give it a try.

I like IMR 4350 with a 165 Hornady BTSP. Good for at least 250 yards. Then I go with Nosler Bal.Tip out to 400 yards. I don't shoot any farther than that.

Wow it looks like 4350 is the hands down favorite. I have used IMR 4064 51-52 gr if I remember correct. Also Varget 51.5 gr and the Nosler BT. I have been tempted to try the new Swift Scirocco bullet. It might just be the universal load for the '06. Good hunting. "D"

My favorite deer 06 deer load for years was the Nosler 165BT over 50gr of IMR4064. I played around with other powders, but somehow never found anything as accurate and consistent as the 4064.

Then about two years ago someone recommended IMR4350, and I started using 56gr with that same Nosler 165BT. Accuracy is perhaps a touch better and I think I'm getting aa bit more velocity, although I haven't really checked it.

You won't go wrong with 4350 or 4064 and nearly any 150-165 grain hunting bullet from Nosler, Sierra, Speer or Hornady.
