Some time ago someone here told me how to figure where to start for weights of powders when makeing reduced loads. I did some in my .308 FR8 mauser with AA #5 and Bullseye. Fun little poppers they are. Now I face shoulder surgery and really need to work up some loads for my 7.5x55 Swiss, .308 hunting rifle as well as my .300 Win. Mag. I hate to be stuck just shooting my .22 for months. From what I have seen in posts I searched it looks like I should be able to find something that will work.

Hodgdon H 4895 loads are hit or miss for accuracy.. with the emphasis on MISS....

I work a lot developing and testing loads with a lot of downloads for kids, new shooters, and just plain old off season shooting, without wearing out the barrel from high velocity loads....

Drop me an email and let me know what kind of velocities you are looking for.. I should be able to give you some ideas of where to start playing with to achieve what you are looking for....

cheers

I was after some hornet speed loads for the .223 rem using 36gr varmint grenades and 53gr match kings.
Would I be able to use ADI AR2207?

I don’t know how reduced you want to go, but I actually cast some of my own bullets and went out and tested AA5744 and surplus 4895 that I got from Pat’s reloading.

These loads do kick, so they are not ultra light. Two hundred grains of lead is after all two hundred grains. But what I came out of my test sequence was that AA5744 gave me much lower standard deviations and extreme spreads than the IMR. Accurate Arms claims they developed this powder for use in the big black powder cases. In a 45/70, I get excellent accuracy and consistent ignition at with a 405 L at 27.5 grains, which still leaves a lot of air space in the case.

So, maybe this powder can give you excellent results at lower charges, without worrying about fillers.

I shot small bore yesterday. Easy on the shoulder, cheaper than centerfire, extremely unforgiving of position. Very hard to do right. Might give that a go, for practice.

I have been told, that shooting a .22LR at two hundred yards is as difficult as shooting a 308 at 1000 yards. If you are in for a low recoil challenge with plenty of wind doping required and perfect position, try that.

Ruger #1 30-06, 26†barrel

205 gr .310" sized 311299 Lyman mold Gas Check
24.5 grs AA5744 CCI #34 PS74 OAL 3.290"

Ave Vel = 1731
Std Dev = 12
ES = 37
Low = 1714
High = 1751

beerHere are some low recoil nice plinker loads in .308 and 30/06 using fast powders and 110 grain bullets. Just fun shooting. Smiler

30/06
  • 12.2 gr. Blue Dot,- 1500 fps.
  • 24.6gr. Acc#9- 2250 fps.
  • 19.2gr. 4756- 2000 fps.
  • 25gr. Blue Dot- 2500 fps.

    .308
  • 23.5gr. 2400- 2350 fps.
  • 26.7 gr. 2400- 2550 fps.
  • 14.2gr. 7625- 1800 fps.
  • 11.5gr. Blue Dot- 1550 fps.
  • 20.7gr. Blue Dot- 2400 fps.
  • 20 gr. 4759- 2000 fps.
  • 26.8gr. 4759- 2450 fps.
  • 28gr. 4759- 2550 fps.
  • 30 gr. 680- 2450 fps.

    With the 7.5 Swiss 80% of the highest .308 loads should be safe. Would not hurt to start a little below, however.

    Interpolating; The loads for the .300 win. mag. should be safe at 109% of the 30/06 loads given here. BOOMroger lefty
