This dilema will show you all how cheap I am. I shoot alot of pistol....cowboy stuff... and I have been using Unique powder for years. Then about a yearago I got a precision micrometer for my powder feed and started using Hodgden TITEGROUP. Both powders afford me about 1000 loads per pound for 45 cal.
Well along comes a post about TITEGROUP being a hazartd becuase you only pull 2.9-3.x grains per load. And double loads can be a problem.....
So I saw this powder called TRAILBOSS. Pulling 3gn in a 45 case over half fills the thing. I got 400 loads pulled and the pound can was going dry.

so the cheap shit in me wants to pull UNIQUE/ The safety part of me says pull the TRAILBOSS.
which side should win.....cheap lil me. or mr ecomomy...... let's assume I will do double dilligence on the reloading process to assure myself of no double loads. I do use a powder cop so that helps a bit.....

your thoughts appreciated.

If you are theoretically 100% sure you won't throw a double charge then whatever uses the least powder is most economical.

Trail Boss comes in less than 1 lb canisters I think, or lighter than the standard weight in standard sized canisters.

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

Confused Since there are 7000grs per lb of powder. 9/16*7000 says a bottle of Trailboss would be 3937grs that at 3grs per load is 1312.5 loads. How is it going dry after 400 that should be only about 1/3 of the bottle.

As usual just my $.02

I understand that. That is still 1312 rds per bottle. $.015per rd loaded.

What I don't understand is a lb of tightgroup only giving 1000rds if you are only using 2.5-3grs per load that should be 2333-2800rds per #.

When I'm loading pistols I stick 50 cases in the tray. Drop powder in all 50 then double check. Even if the powser only uses less than half the case you can easily see a double charge. Or at least I can. Heck a target load of bullseye sure doens't take up much space.

I agree with your analysis of the titegroup reload count per pound being about 2200 rounds.

cost per ounce of Trailboss is $2.21
cost per ounce of Unique is $1.28

thanks for your post.
