Wilson Case Trimmer and 338-06 Trimmer holder?

Greetings fellow forum members,

I have almost completed my reloading setup and need just a few more items.

I have reviewed the comments on this site for the best case trimmer. Based on that information, I have decided to get the Sinclair / Wilson Ultimate Micro Trimmer. I will be reloading for .308 and 338-06. I see there is a Wilson Trimmer Holder for the 308, the 30-06 family, and the 35 Whelen. Do I need a specific holder for the 338-06 or can I use the 30-06 one?

Thank you very much for any input you can provide.

Thomas

Proverbs 30:7-9 (New International Version)

7 "Two things I ask of you, O LORD;
do not refuse me before I die:

8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.

9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, 'Who is the LORD ?'
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.

The 338-06 is simply a member of the 06 family. So a holder that works for the 30-06 will work for the 25-06, 270, 338-06 etc. Heck even the various 7x57 based cases. Anything with a .473 head.

To be interchangeable the diameter and the body taper must match.

The 25-06, 270, 30-06, 35 Whelen will all work with the same holder.
The 7x57 has a different taper and works with the 257 Roberts, 6mm Rem, 7,65 Mauser and yes the 6.5X55. The 8X57 (not designed by Mauser) has a different body taper and requires a different holder.

TVM,

I use the wilson trimmer, and the 30.06 holder works great with a .338-06 case.

I think I also use the same 30-06 holder for my 35 Whelen.

Do you have a separate one for it also?

Good choice on the trimmer. I dont load for a 338/06, so I am assuming what the other gents are telling you is correct about being able use a 30-06 holder. If not, Wilson will make you one for your 338-06 if you send them a few fire rounds. They made one for my 404 Jeffery. I think it was less than $20 and they turned it around in a week. Good folks to deal with.

30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.

SR4759 thanks for the correction. For some reason I was thinking the Wilson worked the same as my Forester. Roll Eyes The Forester is a collet and two heads handle everything I load for.

Always a good day when I learn something new. Big Grin

ramrod340, SR4759, nosualc, muygrande, & adamhunter, I thank you all for taking the time to answer my question. All great information.

nosualc, your using the 30-06 to load for your 338-06 clinches it as absolute. Can I ask what bullets / powders / primers you use?

I have decided to start with Hornady 225gr, CCI 200 primer, and IMR4895. I use IMR4895 for my 308 hunting load (Federal brass, CCI 200 primer, IMR4895, Sierra 180gr Prohunter). I get around 2450fps with the charge I use and it shoots ragged 10 shot holes at 100yds all day long. I could go faster, but don't see a reason. So, that was the "long-winded" way of saying I am trying to economize and use the same powder/primers for both cartridges. I kind of hope it does not work out though, because then I will need to experiment with other combinations. beer

Sincerely,

Thomas (newbie reloader)

TVM sorry for my incorrect answer. Frowner

I have my 340PDK just a touch bigger than a 338Gibbs. I used to run 210Part through it. Then I switched to 200Accubonds I've been very pleased with their performance. I just prefer a little smaller bullet. I used 4895 in my case and it worked OK. Gave good velocity but I found it hard to anticipate pressure. I would show no sign and the next 1/2grs would have major pressure sign. So I switched to RL15. I use 4895 in several other larger calibers and have no issues. Probably was just my combination.

TVM,

The shell holder fits the .338-06 norma brass I have _perfectly_. Engraved on the holder it says .30-06, .270 win, and .280 rem. I think it'll work for any -06 derived case, like the .25-06, .35 whelan, etc.

I haven't actually loaded for my .338-06 yet, as its still being built!

I have norma brass, and I'll be starting with 225gr accubonds over RL-15, and federal LR primers (my gunsmith wanted brass, bullets, etc., and the die before he started working on the barrel; I ordered all the components at once, including the shell holder).
