Compressing RL22

I am loading for a 30Gibbs. My Gibbs shoulder is a little further back than the typical (if there is a typical) Gibbs. My case holds 72.4gr water. I am able to get 68.5gr of RL22 into the case before it spills out (approx .946133gr of RL22 to 1gr water). I fill the case 1/3 at a time then tap it each time until the case is full. I then seat the bullet without any spilling out (RL22 is very compressable). Would appreciate feedback from those that are experienced with RL22 and would like to know how many grains of RL22 per 1gr water you are able to get in the case and how do you do it. I am thinking that pressure will max out with .5 - 1.5 more grains using Horn 165IB's.

Deke,

I put 60 grains of RL 22 into Winchester .270 cases. It fills them almost to the top of the neck.

Usually I will CAREFULLY! hold the case against a running tumbler, which condenses the powder neatly & quickly. I say "carefully" because I worry about a little jumping out.

Good luck!

If you really are serious you can put 1/3 case full in and compress it with a brass rod and add another 1/3 case full and again compress that and again add powder and again compress by adding the bullet.

With your 30 Gibbs you could push a 180 grain bullet to about 2,900'/sec or more.....but be prudent and work up.

Have you tried a long drop tube for your powder funnel?

Vapo, Your right. I get 2948fps w/67grRL22 using Barnes 180XLCBT's. I have not been impressed with the lack of wound channel of the barnes (their penetration is plenty though) so I am trying the lighter IB's.

Onefunzr2, Not in a hurry to run out and buy a drop tube if it won't achieve what I want. Have you worked with RL22 and if so, how many grains of RL22 per grain of water are you able to get in a case with your tube?

Packing it in with a rod sounds like an option. Since this is a hunting load that I won't load that many for, this might work.

Did a quick experiment. Using a wooden dowel to pack in 1/3 at a time, and setting a case on top of a running tumble 1/3 at a time, both netted 69.9gr of RL22 which should get me where I want to be. Thanks!
