i've had this 8# jug of AA2200 sitting around for some time and decided to try it out with my .223 savage. with the max load of 22grs with a 60gr vmax bullet, i was only getting 2600 fps. i should be getting 3000 fps. anyone else have this problem?

12BVss-s 26" barrel.223, 22.5g., 2200

55gr. 3200fps.

75gr. 2860 fps.

62gr. 3050 fps.

64gr. 3000 fps.

Stevens 22" barrel 22gr. 2200

55gr. 2975 fps. ?

60gr. 3000 fps.

62gr. 2965 fps.

75gr. 2800 fps.

Are you sure your chronograph is working properly? I have used a lot of 2200 in 222 Rem and have always gotten velocities in line with Roger's data.

my chrony is right on with my .308 and varget powder. i loaded up some AA2520 with the 60gr bullets. hopefully i'll get out to test them this weekend.

well, my chrony works and i must have gotten a mis-labeled jug of powder. with 26gr of AA2520 and 60gr vmax bullets, i was averaging 3,200 fps. now the question is, i have 8# of unknown AA ball powder. since the published data does not correlate with published velocities, should i work up loads until i start to see high pressure signs?

I'd say that could depend on why you want/need the additional velocity. If your rifle will do the job you want it to do, at the velocity you are now getting, you could just use the powder up with that level of load. That would likely be one of the safest courses of action.

Or, if you are well enough off financially, you could just spread the powder over your lawn (thinly!) come Spring...it makes great fertilizer.

If it was mine, I'd work up to a safe, hotter load, but I have 50+ years of handloading experience, so PROBABLY wouldn't harm my rifle or myself in the process. If a person isn't fully experienced in handloading, that is likely not a number one choice for them with an "uknown" powder...which is what any mislabeled powder is.

i need the extra velocity for prairie dogs at 300yds i've been reloading for 35 years now and have seen quite abit from my lee load-all (use a hammer and the sizing die) to my dillon 550. since the rifle is a savage, which vents gases to the side in case of a kaboom, i feel comfortable working up a load. so far, i have went from 23gr to 24gr in .3gr increments without signs of high pressures. at 24gr my ave vel was 2,830 fps. maybe it got mixed up at the plant with 2520

Yes by all means! From what you indicate you have a slower burning powder and one that might give you some very good results. I certainly wouldn't put it on the lawn. roger
