Recently acquired a Rem. model 7 SS with 20 " bbl. I want to load 85 grn bullets for it as sort of a dual purpose load. checked all my reloading books and mags. last night concenius seems to be 45 grns of imr 4350 for about 3200. Anyone else use 85 grn .243 bullets ? What would be your recommendations and expected vel. in the 20" bbl. Also would like to know your views on thhis rifle, good, bad and ugly. Thanks

Hello 358,

If "dual purpose" includes whitetail deer, you might want to consider a heavier bullet? I currently load the 95 gr NBTs with H4831 for deer. I have not done much with the lighter bullets, so no help there.

Regards, Bill

I have used 85 grain noslers on whitetails and on mule deer does and they work great. But that was from a 6mm so I have no 243 data.

As to the rem model 7, I have one and I think it's a clunky piece of junk. I am saving it for my son to use when he is older. If the model 7 accidentally slips under the truck tire, we won't worry about it.
