Going through Ramshots 2006 data I found some interesting load data for the 7mm-08. Ramshot has a 160gr Sierra HPBT traveling 2750fps and a 175gr traveling a whopping 2650fps. This is 280 Rem velocities.

Think this can be done??

Well I can't see how it can be done at factory pressures. Setting 65,000 as the upper limit Loadtech lets me get to 2740 with the 160s from a 24" and seating the bullet out to give it more capacity. At 2.8 I can't get it above 2680.
For the 175 it says 2545 at 65,000. If you have a 22" drop 25-50fps.

They also list pressure a 58,500psi.

IIRC the 280Rem has a lower SAAMI pressure rating because of the rifles it was originally chambered in, the 7600pump and the 7400auto.

Speer list a 160 & 175 gr bullet at 2735 & 2628 fps respectivly.
People have come to expect the 308 to rival the `06 with the 180 gr and lighter bullets, why are we suprised when like caliber rounds based on both parent cases act similar?

BTW
Speer shows the 280 driving the same bullets at 2854 and 2644 fps. They list these loads at 60K psi max, the 7-08 runs at 61K psi. Not much difference in pressure.

I don't think the data is far out of line..... The 7-08 actually isn't far behind the .280 anyway.

Loadtech Data is based on burn/pressure info supplied by the vendor I believe. So a different burn rate would change the data. At equal pressure you wouldn't expect the 280 to give much more than a 110-150gain. 7-10 grs more powder is 17% divide by 4 is 4.25% times 2650 or 113FPS. No reason not to load either to 63-65,000.

Depending on which 160gr bullet you use, I could see the 7-08 getting within 100fps of the .280. The problem w/ all of the short rounds is OAL. At 2.80", there just isn't as much room for powder when you are talking long bullets like the 160grNAB or any 175gr for that matter.
