Based on another person asking about adjusting powder charges for best accuracy... I thought I would post some work I did with the 6mm Remington a while ago, but logged the results...

Hope some one finds some use out of this....I test 14 different powders... and picked one bullet since this is going to be load for prairie dogs, WAAAAY out there!

The Rifle is a Pac Nor Barreled Remington 700...
The barrel is in a Heavy Magnum contour, Stainless Steel, 24 inches in length, with a one in 8 twist... This was also done on a Long Action as I wanted to be able to seat the bullets way out.. and not intrude into the cases powder department...

cases were Winchester 6mm Remingtons....
Primers were CCI large rifle...
Stock was a Boyd's Laminate...
Harris Bi POD with an Owl ear sand bag for under the buttstock...
Targets were downloaded targets off of Remington's website...
All bullets seated to the Model 700s magazine length.. which was previously a 30/06 from 1980 production....bought new in 1980 at Sears for $319.00....( ADL )....

10 bullets were loaded for each powder, to give two different 5 shot groups to compare the results....distance was at 100 yds... Scope was a cheap Tasco 6 x 24 with a target dot....Set on 8 power...

Powder charges were picked at random, based on pouring over a batch of load data in manuals and off of the forum here....

BULLET: 75 GRAIN HORNADY HP!

After testing the accuracy, each load was chronographed...

1. IMR 4064/ 40 grs: MV 3408 fps Grp Size: 1.158

2. IMR 4895/40 grs: MV: 3451: GrpSize: 1.114

3. IMr 3031/40 grs: MV: 3545 GrpSize: 0.5255

4. IMR 4320/42 grs: MV; 3479 fps: GrpSize: 0.7655

5. IMR 4198/32grs: MV: 3218 fps: GrpSize: 0.7915

6. IMR 4350/45 grs: MV: 3427 fps: GrpSize:0.6695

Reloader Powder:

7. RL 7/ 30 grs: MV 3027 fps: GrpSize: 0.4845

8. RL 15/ 44 grs: MV: 3690 fps: GrpSize: 0.4765

Hodgdon Powders:

9. Varget/40 grs: MV: 3356 fps: GrpSize: 0.5405

10. H380/ 44 grs: MV 3483 fps: GrpSize: 0.5725

11. H 335/42 grs: MV 3643 fps: GrpSize: 0.4805
( 2 shot grpsize: 0.155!)

12. H 4895/ 40grs: MV 3505 fps: GrpSize: 0.96

13. BC/2; 42 grs: MV 3468 fps: GrpSize: 0.127

14. H 414/ 47.5 grs: MV 3726: GrpSize: 0.0505!

That last group just about knocked me out.. in complete disbelief, I went home and loaded up some more.. and went back to the range and re did the string.. with the same results! This is the best group I have ever shot with about any rifle or any powder, any manufacture, etc...

All groups were measured with a digital caliper and then with a calculator the bore size (.243) was substracted... that is why the 4 digit group sizes listed.... Of course anyone can guess which powder is going to be the diet of this barrel for its service life!

testing was done Memorial Day, 2005...weather clear and perfect....

Congrats on the load. Just one question?? why shoot for groups w/ the scope set at 8 power, seems better target visualization w/ high power setting.. advise and thanks,

Doc,

With my eyesight, even when I am using a Leupold or top quality scope, I can still see thru it only up to about 14 power.. after that, It looks like I am looking thru a glass of water....

When I shoot prairie dogs or sage rats, I am still never setting the scope higher than 10 or 12 power....Just what I can see...

Sucks getting old!

seafire, Just happen to have some Hornadys on hand and some 760, might just try your load this spring, what primer would you recommend? I've got Rem, 210Ms and CCIs on hand. And how far from the lands are you? Jay

Jay,

I am using CCI large rifle primers, pretty much, just based on local availability is the chief driving factor behind that.....

As far as how far off of the lands.. I'll have to plead ignorance...I originally, had some dummy rounds made up that were to the max magazine length in the 30/06 before it was rebarreled.....

When I had the barrel fitted, I told the gunsmith, to make the chamber fit the dummy rounds.... They were a 95 grain Ballistic tip, a 107 grain Sierra Match and a 115 grain Berger match....

Sorry can't be any more exact than that...Remember also this is a long action Remington that this is on....

yeah Doc,

I know John Noveske... He considers me a good customer of his, although I have had work down by him, before he hit his fame with his ARs... He is a good guy... a little strange, but honest and dedicated to what he does.. I think that "little strange" is actually, what sets him apart....

I'd recommend his work, to anyone, and compare it against anyone elses work, anywhere...

Bill, when the sage rats start running, maybe we can get together and do some shooting together...

I have been luck enough to shoot over in Bonanza the last couple of years.. real nice gentleman, has let me have access to his 4700 acres over there....

People are sure more down to earth on your side of the mountain....
