I shot my 300 win mag yesterday and I liked it alot. Great shooter, I also shot my friends 338 and I noticed quite a difference in recoil. His is a savage stainless and it is ported. Mine is a browning a bolt. I was wondering if the porting actually is that big of a difference or if there was another factor involved i am unaware of. Not that the recoil is unbareable or anything, Just think I could be more acurate with a little less reciol. Thanks

Most people are link slinkies, Basically useless but fun to push down the stairs.

It really depends on what the gun will be used for. While felt recoil is different from person to person, all it comes down to is what you can shoot comfortably (i.e. not flinching). If it is a hunting rifle I would pay serious attention to the increased noise that will come with a ported rifle. I have a 30-378 WBY with the factory installed muzzle brake that will cause you to go deaf for about 20 minutes if shot without ear protection. If you shoot the 300 with no flinching now, I would advise against it...just my opinion.

I have a Browning Citori 12 ga. O/U Sporting Clays shotgun with factory-ported barrels, and I wish they were not ported because those holes are near-impossible to clean.

I shoot only light target loads -- usually 1 oz. loads at 1150 f.p.s. -- in this shotgun, so recoil is not a big problem. I suppose the porting reduces muzzle jump, but so what -- I do not see that it is a problem either.

If I were shooting heavy loads I might appreciate the porting, but then it would be in a hunting situation where I'd fire only a few shots in a day instead of the 100 or so that one may shoot on the skeet range.

Gunz,
I had a 7mmRM that I hunted with for 9 years. The only issues I had with the gun was recoil. I always wanted to have a KDF reoil reducer installed, but never could afford it. Well, that one has long been traded away, but I just got an old tang safetied ruger that has the KDF on it. The differance in recoil is like night and day, and it seems to shoot accuratley. As far as noise goes, I haven't shot it without protection yet. I'm wondering if your mind will block out the sound when I'm sighting on a buck as it does with normal calibers.

recoil reduction, nice. but just as sure as god made little green apples you will be reminded by your ears and your mind every time you fire it. the friends you hunt with will also enjoy it. not.

The only ported rifle I have is my Marlin 1895g guide gun. I have nothing to compare it too directly. I have shot it with heavy loads side by side with a 1895ss(longer bbl, heavier), and it seemed to recoil about the same as the heavier rifle so the porting must be doing something.

Hi,

I have a couple rifles mag-na-ported, a rem700 in 375HH that weighs scoped and loaded 8lbs 4z and a brown precision ruger 77 in 300win that weighs 7lbs 7oz. I give the weight because these rifles are in my mind rather lite. I think it helps reduce recoil and muzzle rise. I'd do it, just my opinion.

I have a .338 win mag with a BOSS on it, outstanding accuracy and shot like a .270 from the bench, everything was good until the first time I hunted with it. One shot and I thought my ears were going to bleed. It was the worst thing I've ever experienced. So I bought an eliminator for the BOSS's muzzlebrake and still use the BOSS but it kicks like a normal .338 now. I would take the recoil any day unless of course it is just a bench gun and never hunted with.
My 2 cents don't get a brake for a hunting gun. I hear some Outfitters frown on them too cuz their guides are getting their ears rung but good.

I have had several muzzlebraked rifles, 257 WBY, 300WBY 416 WBY and found them too loud to hunt with.
I now have a 300 Win Mag and a 375 H&H with Magna-Port. To my ears the Magna-Port does not seem any louder than a regular bbl. The Magna-Port takes the "sting" out of both calibers.
As a plus the Magna-Port does not kick up grass, dirt or snow.
I like the Magna-Port quite a lot.

I recently acquired a Mag-Na-Ported Blaser R93 bbl. in 9,3x62. Noise increase seems to be more noticeable for bystanders than for the shooter. Recoil feels reduced and comes straight back, which helps for fast repeating in running shots (drive hunting).

I plan on Magna-Porting my 470Capstick in the coming months. From what I've read its about a 30% reduction in recoil and significantly less muzzle rise. I can do with both!
Noise perception is a funny thing. Had reason to shoot a snake in the dog run on New Year's eve. Normally a 12 guage leaves my ears ringing, but I never felt nor heard the gun fire ... just one very dead, two piece snake.
Cheers...

Just remember that a given noise level will do the same amount of damage to your ears whether your mind ignores it or not. Hearing damage is physical, not mental.
