I tried a load of 68-73gr of IMR4831 and a COL of 3.340" with disappointing results. The best group was .906" and that was with 69gr of powder. Does anyone have a powder start load that might work better? My other 2 300's love the IMR 4831 but not this one.

Thanks for any help.

BTW: I have the following powders on hand

Varget
H4831SC
RL 15
RL 19
Retumbo

Bruz,

I have been working a lot with Varget and 30 cal. My 300 WM is happy with it. I have been using 150s though. I would start with the Varget at 53 and work up. I get about 3200 out of 150s with 61.5 and no pressure signs. I would think you need to be looking close past 57 with 168s and you might get to 59 and just over 3000 if your gun agrees. If it's like mine, a little bit below that should look good. Once you get the groups the best they can be then start playing with seating depth. Some of mine like to be close to the lands (.005) and one like .070. Don't have a clue why.

Well, you already have 3 other excellent powder choices to use.

I would certainly try the Re19, H4831SC, and Retumbo. IN that order.

Thanks for the information. I hope Varget will work well as I already use it in my 338-06,7mm/08 and 22-250. If it does I may soon be down to 1 powder.....That would make life simple.

As far as the .906" group goes. It ws the only group under 1.5" out of the 7 test loads. I even had 2 loads that were over 2 inches. My Sendero and Howa would both shoot the 168's into the .5's if I do my part and average around .75" with 72.5gr of IMR 4831.

Ok understand about the group sizes now. Last year I wanted to run 130 TSXs in my '06. During the work up I go one group at close to 1/2 inch but the speed was only ~2850, and all the rest of the groups varied from just over an inch to just under three. I didn't like/trust them to shoot so well at 2900 and 70 degrees outside and shoot the same at near zero.

FWIW Varget is the first one I reach for now to do workups. Not 4350 anymore.

I haven't used it myself yet but I have been told RL 22 is very good in a 300wm with very good vel too.

So what is wrong with .906 groups?

If need be, try seating the bullet out further, it helped in my 300.

Terry,

The adjacent groups were so large that I don't know if I can trust the group so to speak. If the load prior or the load higher were around an inch I would call it good and load them up but the 68gr group was over 1.5" and the 70gr group was almost 2 inches.

Bruz, thanks.

I think I used 71 gr of H 4831 and got very good results, but, that may be too hot in your gun. It also looks like it does not not like to shoot well if pushed to hard.

You could also try Rel 19 as sometimes a little faster powder will work bettr.
