SmilerThinking about trying a 129 grain bullet in my .260. Was thinking about the Hornady SST or the Interlock. Will be shooting white tails from about 150 yards, maybe out to 300. Any suggestions on the best of the two from experience, preformace, meat damage, etc?

For starters, the SST indeed IS an interlock bullet also -- ableit with a polymer tip and a sleeker profile.

Both perform similarly, but the SST does offer a slightly better window of velocity for expansion at extended ranges. Due to its polymer tip, it also tends to open quicker than the standard 129 grain SP. Nevertheless, the differences are rather minimal as long as the velocity is modest.

I don't use the 129s much as they are neither here nor there in terms of terminal performance. They don't shoot quite as flat as a 120 and don't offer the sectional density or penetration of the 140s.

While the 129s do offer more than sufficient penetration and expansion on whitetails, I prefer 140 grain bullets in the medium-to-large capacity 6.5s. At the moderate starting velocities common to the .260 and 6.5x55, the 140s perform exceptionally well, and virtually all game is anchored in its tracks when the 140s hit their mark. Hogs are in abundance in my part of Texas, and I've used the 140s to take quite a few of these tough critters. A mature boar -- with thick, tough hide, a cartiligous shield and a layer of fat that can be an inch thick -- tests a bullet like no deer can. But launch a 6.5mm, 140 grain projectile at moderate velocity, and you'll quickly see why cartridges such as the 6.5x55 Swedish have earned such an enviable reputation.

I've just started loading my .260, so I've not taken game with my own loads. However, in trying different bullets, the Hornagy 129 SST is the one giving me the best performance, and what I feel I'll try first on game.\

I quit hunting with my .260 several years ago while using 140 gr factories. With every deer I shot, the 140 slug would just go in and out, barely expanding at all. Nearly everyone ran, and bloodtrails were a little tough with pinholes on both sides.

I really enjoy the round , though, and am looking for something a bit more frangible than a 140 gr corelokt psp. I'm gonna try a SST first personally. Smiler

Blob1 I have used the 129 gr spire pts in some full throttle loads in a 6.5 swede and found them to perform very well on whitetails.Actually the performance was very similar to performance of a 270 with 130 gr bullets. Thats not too shabby at all!

My limited use on game with my 260 & the 129 SP is similar to snowmans. I`ve settled on it as my "deer" bullet in my 260 and Swede. The SST version is accurate in my rifles, but I haven`t shot it at an animal yet to give any comment on it`s behavior.

Timberman-Remington had a major problem with some of their early .260 ammo. MV from a 24" tube was no more than 2400 fps -- and therein existed the problem. At a couple hundred yards, the velocity was below the design parameter of the bullet, and you'd get virtually no expansion.

SmilerA lot of hunters hunting from stands and shooting out two about 200 yards are using 22/250s here and I nailed one of the bucks last year in the head with my .223. Several use 6MM. I have no problem with a 120 grain or 129 in the 260 killing a White tail, just was wondering if anyone had info on them.

either the standard interlock or the SST will do in whitetails nicely. I prefer the interlocks in the 6.5X55 and the .260 because the jackets are a trifle heavier and increases the chances for a pass thru,.
