Hi everyone, I just began reloading .38 special and have found that my loads (158gr lswc 3.8gr of 231) are more accurate out of my S&W model 10, than out of my ruger GP100 4". What are some of the factors that contribute to this? Does overall length have anything to do with it since a .38 will travel further in a .357 before it reaches the forceing cone? Is the rifling different in a .357 than in a .38 special? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks... -George

The distance the boolit travels before hitting the forcing cone has very little to do with accuracy. I have read that it does for years but if I look into my BFR 45-70 chamber, the boolit is WAY down there. It has shot 9/16" groups at 50 yd's and under an inch at 100. Most of my other revolvers also have room between the boolit and the end of the throats. Most likely what you are seeing is the S&W has tighter dimensions then the Ruger. You might try unsized boolits in the Ruger to see what they do. I don't know offhand if the twists are different.
