Even at 22-250 velocity you need more twist than a 1 in 14. To shoot that bullet weight to full potential a 1 in 10 would be required. A 1 in 12 twist may do it marginally. You might try the 60 gr. Sierra Varminter or the 60 Hornady VMax. It might shoot OK. Hope this is some help.

Craig,
Several years ago, we ran extensive tests on the 22-250, and found that a 55 gr. bullet was the absolute max. weight that would stabilize in a 1 in 14 twist. the 50's and 52's are much better. Shoot much tighter.

If you are going to shoot heavier bullets, you need at least a 1 in 12 twist, and for a 70 gr. bullet, a 1 in 10 would be better.

Almost all 22-250 production rifles come with the 1 in 14 twist, with the exception of Sako which has a 1 in 12 twist. At least that was the way it was the last time I checked. To shoot the long heavy projectiles you are wanting to, you are looking at a custom re-barrel job.

If you want a super accurate load, I'll give you one we stumbled onto a way back when, that seems to shoot well in about any rifle you put it in. It will shoot 1/4 inch groups out of my Ruger 77 Varmiter any time you try it. It consists of 37 grs. Norma 202 behind a Sierra #1330 flat base bullet, and a standard primer. Velocity is 3810 FPS. Superb load.

Craig - Many years ago I used the Speer 70 grain semi-spitzer in my 788, 22-250. That bullet is a bit shorter/fatter in profile than the new heavy-weight .224 slugs, so, it's not quite as picky about a fast twist rate, especially if you keep the velocity up. The missus used the load on a couple of PA whitetails, and it worked well (one shot kills).

The thing would shoot 5/8" groups @ 100 yards. Don't have exact load data here, but, it was some amount of IMR4064. That was in my pre-chrony days, so, I'm not certain of exact velocity. Sorry I can't be more specific. Speer still lists loads in their manual.

I also have had good luck with the Speer 70 grain bullets. i use them in my Ruger M77 in .220 Swift also with 1 in 14 twist. My best accuracy was at around 3300 fps(1/2" - 3/4" groups). I had my best consistent groups with H4895 and H414 in that cartridge. PC
