SocratesCast bullets and elephants
Found an old guy that knows a little about guns, and asked him about cast bullets for dangerous game:
"PACO
I ONCE KILLED AN ELEPHANT WITH A
280 GRAIN 9.3 CAST BULLET...BACK ABOUT FORTY YEARS AGO WHEN I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULDN'T DO IT...SINCE ALL THE TURN OF THE 20 CENTURY HUNTERS HAD BEEN DOING IT FOR YEARS....ALSO THE EDITOR OF THE AMERICAN RIFLEMEN KILLED CAPE BUFF WITH A 375 H&H AND CAST SLUGS....AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT BRITTLE AND ARE HEAVY FOR THE BORE SIZE 2200 TO 2400 WILL DO THE JOB...
I USE A 280 LYMAN 358 CAST BULLET IN MY 35 WHELEN....AND HAVE TAKEN ALL KINDS OF AMERICAN GAME WITH IT AT 2500 FPS...SO THE ANSWER AS FAR AS I FEEL IS YEAS WITH THE RIGHT TEMPER AND THE RIGHT CAST BULLET FOR THE BORE SIZE...p "
I HAVE to follow up on this...

StonecreekThe proper alloy makes the cast bullet act as a solid, and usually with more consistency than jacketed solids. The cast bullet will be shorter and, by definition, denser. I've never understood why the guys shooting low velocity big bores (under 2200 fps or so) would bother with anything else when they want a non-expanding bullet.

<Harald>My memory of Sir Samuel Baker's experience of using cast bullets in his 10 bores was that they would not work on frontal head shots. I think his first attempt worked and never thereafter did he succeed in dropping one. He was using lead hardened with mercury to keep the density high (actually increases it). The 8 bores and 4 bores worked for frontal brain shots. Bear in mind that these bullets were little more than round balls and had velocities of 1300 to 1600 fps. In those days of collosal arms the heart / lung shot was a typical one. Nowadays I think most people aim for the brain.

SocratesThe only question now is the cost, and time, vs. just buying some of Gerards bullets...
That HV looks really good. You get the ballistics of a bthp, with the killing power of a flat nose solid. Scary.

Lots of people think cast bullets, in handguns, are superior to jacketed bullets.
