Hi folks !

I'm reloading a 7mm TCU for a 10" Contender. I'd like to get the bullet closer to the lands, but the darn chamber is so long, I'd have to really stick the bullet out there. I'm already seating about .100" below the cannalure (towards the base of the bullet) now. This is with a 139 gr. Hornady PSP bullet. The lands are still a long way off. [Frown]

What would you think is the minimum amount of bullet seating you can go with in this case? [Confused]

I know pressure may be affected (reduced) due to added case volume, but I'm curious if anybody else out there has this thought?

Thanks !

Hello Dino,

The common "rule of thumb" for bullet seating in rifles that are magazine fed is that you want at least one full bullet diameter in the neck. I don't think that there is a similar rule for single-shots. As long as the bullet is held reasonably well in the case (you can't cant the bullet without tools), and cartridge runout is acceptable, you should be alright.

Just my opinion, Bill

Bill is right on all counts as far as I'm concerned.

I would also mention, though, that in my experience there really isn't always an advantage to seating close to the lands. I actually have found that altering seating depth as a final step to load development to be the best way to go.

For my light, fast varmint calibers, I seat the bullets WAY into the case, a trick I learned from Hornady techs after examining some of their VMAX ammo. This actually helps prevent the deformation during obturation of those bullets, and believe it or not greatly enhances accuracy.

Larger bullets don't benefit from the deep seating as much, if at all, but I'm in the camp that seating to touch the lands isn't always necessary for best accuracy. I've got a 1/4 MOA 30-06 Remington 700 and a 3/8 MOA Winchester model 70 which both prove this to me.

Go with a powder and charge that the Nosler manual recommends as being one of the most accurate tested, and then work with altering the seating depth and you be literally amazed at how much group tuning ability lies in OAL changes.

Take care,

Dino,

My experience is that it really doesn't matter how much of the bullet is inserted into the case. I've got the same problem with looooooong throats in my factory T/C barrels. I really have no hope of getting the bullets close to the lands, so I just started with an arbitrary length and tuned from there.

By the way, have you tried some lighter loads with 4227 in your 7 TCU?

Thanks for your reply. No, I haven't tried 4227 for a lighter load, but you're the 3rd person that has suggested that to me ! I think it's time I did; dang it!

"In the beginning" I stocked-up (bought several pounds to keep the lot number consistant) on H4895 because I read and was told "H4895 is the powder of choice for the 7mm TCU." Well, I'm sure it is and it does just fine, I just want to be able to shoot this puppy without getting whiplash.

Guess it's time to go to the shootin' store (oh darn!) for some powder and the other things I'm sure I'll know I need when I see them ! [Wink]

Thanks again.

When I was shooting metallic silhouette with the 7mm TCU, I used the Hornady 154 spire point and 23/H4895 for 1638 f.p.s. The load was plenty accurate for shooting "off your hind legs", so I did not fiddle with seating depth much -- it did not seem to matter.

Some questions:

1) Was that in a 10" barrel?

2) I plan on shooting standing. This load should work for this, no? Or too much kick?

I just might try this load too !

Thanks.

Dino -
I thought that I was the first person to tell you to try 4227 in your 7TCU (a while ago)! Doesn't really matter but I'm confident that you will enjoy the difference.

I also wanted to tell you that I like your choice of poems on your signature lines. I've like Crane since my high school days and I thought that was one of the best/funniest that he wrote.

You like a bit more muzzle blast than I do. Like Dino, I tried some H4895 but quickly stopped using it for my standing loads...primarily because of the muzzle blast. With the current topple rule setting of the rams, it doesn't require as much power as you are/were loading into it either.

B: You probably were! Consider my reluctance to change a mix of stubborn dago and cheap SOB. What am I going to do with all that H4895?

B: I like it because it depicts the abysmal atttitude of SO MANY people these days. "GIVE ME this! You OWE me that! What - I have to WORK?" You bet your a** you do buddy!! You want something - you gotta earn it ! And that goes for respect too. That's how I was raised and that's how I raised my three sons. NOBODY owes you NOTHIN' ! I'm tired of this bulls**t attitude that the world owes you something. [Mad] [Mad] [Mad]

Allright, I got a little crazy there, but damn if it ain't true !

I agree - you don't need a cruise missle when a Sidewinder will do ! [Wink]
