Hi folks ! I'm reloading a 7mm TCU for a 10" Contender. I'd like to get the bullet closer to the lands, but the darn chamber is so long, I'd have to really stick the bullet out there. I'm already seating about .100" below the cannalure (towards the base of the bullet) now. This is with a 139 gr. Hornady PSP bullet. The lands are still a long way off. What would you think is the minimum amount of bullet seating you can go with in this case? I know pressure may be affected (reduced) due to added case volume, but I'm curious if anybody else out there has this thought? Thanks ! [ 08-13-2002, 21:14: Message edited by: Dino32HR ]

Hello Dino, The common "rule of thumb" for bullet seating in rifles that are magazine fed is that you want at least one full bullet diameter in the neck. I don't think that there is a similar rule for single-shots. As long as the bullet is held reasonably well in the case (you can't cant the bullet without tools), and cartridge runout is acceptable, you should be alright. Just my opinion, Bill

Dino, My experience is that it really doesn't matter how much of the bullet is inserted into the case. I've got the same problem with looooooong throats in my factory T/C barrels. I really have no hope of getting the bullets close to the lands, so I just started with an arbitrary length and tuned from there. By the way, have you tried some lighter loads with 4227 in your 7 TCU?

B_Koes: Thanks for your reply. No, I haven't tried 4227 for a lighter load, but you're the 3rd person that has suggested that to me ! I think it's time I did; dang it! "In the beginning" I stocked-up (bought several pounds to keep the lot number consistant) on H4895 because I read and was told "H4895 is the powder of choice for the 7mm TCU." Well, I'm sure it is and it does just fine, I just want to be able to shoot this puppy without getting whiplash. Guess it's time to go to the shootin' store (oh darn!) for some powder and the other things I'm sure I'll know I need when I see them ! Thanks again. When I was shooting metallic silhouette with the 7mm TCU, I used the Hornady 154 spire point and 23/H4895 for 1638 f.p.s. The load was plenty accurate for shooting "off your hind legs", so I did not fiddle with seating depth much -- it did not seem to matter.

KLN: Some questions: 1) Was that in a 10" barrel? 2) I plan on shooting standing. This load should work for this, no? Or too much kick? I just might try this load too ! Thanks.

Dino - I thought that I was the first person to tell you to try 4227 in your 7TCU (a while ago)! Doesn't really matter but I'm confident that you will enjoy the difference. I also wanted to tell you that I like your choice of poems on your signature lines. I've like Crane since my high school days and I thought that was one of the best/funniest that he wrote. KLN - You like a bit more muzzle blast than I do. Like Dino, I tried some H4895 but quickly stopped using it for my standing loads...primarily because of the muzzle blast. With the current topple rule setting of the rams, it doesn't require as much power as you are/were loading into it either.
