I have a Uberti 1885 Hi- Wall in 45/70. What bullets and loads are you using with this rifle? I'm leaning toward Reloader 7 powder and either Barnes 300 grain bulets or Hornady 350 grain bullets. Please share any data you may have on accuracy and safety with this setup.

40.0 grains of RL7 under a 405 grain cast (WW) bullet. No crimp, gas check, or wad needed. No leading problem. about 1600fps out of my high wall. Recoil is apparent, but managable. This is one killer of a load.

I load for 4-45-70's and this load shoots well in all of them. Alot of people will advocate a faster powder, so they can save on powder(lighter load). I do not agree with doing that, I have seen powder position problems in the 45-70. And it can get ugly.

I notice you said the Barnes or Hornady bullet. If I were you I would go with cast bullets. Buy them already cast if you do not cast your own. The cost of the bullets you listed is too high, and IMO they will not perform a dime bit better than cast bullets as far as being more effective on game, and accuracy.

Those bullets may be a bit flatter shooting because of the lighter weight. But the fun of a 45-70 is to go out and shoot your rifle, and "learn" what your rifle does in the field. With cast bullets you can shoot a lot for a little. I cast my own bullets and I can shoot 500 rounds for $100. Tom.
