Has anyone heard if ammo prices are due to increase again after the first of the year? I got my January Midway flyer in the mail yesterday and YIKES! Some of the hard cast lead bullets I use for my pistol loads have gone way up and I noticed the plain old Winchester .44 magnums have gone to around $40 for a box of 50. I checked around online a few other places and found their advertised prices were still cheaper. Just wondered if I should think about increasing my stockpile before the first of the year if prices are going to increase again in the near future.

I am mainly worried about the components not the loaded stuff. If I didn't load I would find another way to spend my time because shooting factory ammo has no future.

As metal prices go up, so will the cost of ammo, both factory loaded ammo and components. Factory ammo will go up first, and components will follow suit. Copper prices are through the roof, so jacketed bullets are seeing the biggest increase, but just about all metals' prices are up. The only way to really combat this is to start casting your own bullets for all your calibers for which they are suitable, and scavenge up your own lead. The only calibers I am still loading jacketed bullets in is my 375 H&H and 223 Rem.

from 2 years ago copper/brass is up by about 3x lead by 10x. however during the last year the prices have been pretty stable. can't blame this one on metal prices

As an example, I shoot a ton of these in my .44 magnum and they are my favorite handgun bullets: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?s...id=150058&t=11082005 I remember just a few months ago they were listed at a little over $60 regular price but now the regular price shown is $70.99. Three years ago I bought five boxes at $28 each. I haven't been following the prices as closely lately so I wasn't sure if we should expect an across the board price increase in the near future.

Welcome to Classic Inflation in action. When a currency is devalued, it won't buy much. Unfortunately, folks in the countries issuing the devalued currency want to live at the same level as when their currency had more value, so they demand more of it in payment for anything they provide to others. Also, they fear things getting even worse, so they try to build a "rainy day" fund (hedge) against that possibility too. So they demand even more money for their goods or services. When you mix in crackpot "fad science" too, which results in eco-maniacs trying to do away with mining, petroleum use, imagined sources of multiple diseases, etc. etc., in their quest for power and yet more power over their neighbors, prices get completely out of control. All you have to add to that is one country (ours) borrowing roughly $1 Billion per day on he international money market to finance its continued personal and governmental pork sprees, and you get what you are starting to experience. I fear you will see more of it, not less. The world is not finished with its devaluation of our currency...just wait 'til the dollar is no longer the accepted "oil currency".

It's the Chinese... They buy all the lead, put it in paint for toys, hoping that we will run out of bullets for the day when they call in our debt. Since I made my last post I was digging around in some old papers and found the November 2007 Midway flyer. I found out I was wrong, the bullets I linked to above were listed at $42.99 regular price. Thats an almost $30 increase in just two months.
Actually I think the Chinese are trying to poison us.

Yeah when looking at the price of things, remember that our dollar is worth about half of what it was 18 months ago... So if the dollar was still worth what it was, fuel would be closer to $1.50 a gallon right now... of course companies always milk extra increases when "prices go up".....knowing the public won't know exact if, or how much... Ammo prices are only going up. I don;t buy factory, except for SD/HD pistol ammp, I handload everything. If you haven;t started handloading, you should. Yes components are going up but you still get more bang for your buck handloading. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!
