Tar from burning wood or paper is acidic with acids and liquids produced from incomplete combustion. How about powder tar? I know my rimfire rifles and my SKS produce tar, and they don't smell friendly, especially SKS.

Pyrotek,

From a theoretical standpoint, correctly manufactured modern smokeless powders should not leave an acidic residue.

From a practical standpoint, the ammonia in many bore cleaners will neutralize any (possible) acidic fouling. If you are concerned about storage, some of the gun oils, Clenzoil is one, have a mildly alkaline makeup, as do many greases.
