Hi guys, I have been given and old rusty Dillon XL 650 by a shooting buddy, it hasnt been used in about 15 years, and is in bits in a large box.
I have never used a dillon before (always used lee presses) and dont have the instruction manuel, does anyone have any tips, or know if there are any instructional videos on how to put it together??
I will be loading 9mm 38/357 and 40s&w

Hello 308mate,

Dillon has excellent customer service. Google them for an address or phone number and ask them... They will even refurbish the machine!

If you box it up and send it to Dillon they will put it back otgether and even refurbish it for free.

dillon is great to deal with. can't ever go wrong with them. they stand behind everything just like they say

It appears that Dillon does not have a European Sales facility and they are not licensed for export of firearms parts, reloading components, etc.

Their loaders are hardy ... a little surface rust isn't going to hurt any thing.

They are good with e-mails ... request their assistance in getting your machine running. If the main rotation surfaces are OK then it's things like the primer feed and collator that may need some parts. Take some digital pics and be prepared to send them.

Bet they'll be happy to help you!

thanks guys, I down loaded the user manuel and put the old girl together, what a fantastic machine!!!! I loaded 500 9mm in about 90 min.
I'm sure the next time will be even faster!
all I need to do now is order a 40s&w conversion kit

I don't think they do it for free anymore, too many guys taking advantage & buying beaters, but they don't charge much to refurbish either.
A great machine for high volumn pistol/rifle shooter. No flys on the 550B either.

It is my understanding that they do not warrantee buzzers or electric motors any more either. I could be mistaken but that is what I heard.

Yeah ... it will go faster next time ... probably by 20 minutes or more.

Is a good medium speed progressive loader that is very versatile.

Just out of curiosity what machine on the market that is affordable for most of us is faster?

None. Add a bullet feeder to the 650 & you can get 1000rds/hour+ sustained. Pretty fast for around $1100.

They will replace elec after the 1yr warranty for 50%. Not a bad deal.

I would add bullet feeder to my 650 but you need to use jacketed bullets and all my pistol stuff runs lead.

The highest throughput, rationally priced loader I have used is the Dillon 1050. It is significantly faster than the 650 ... and priced as such.

Really shines if you're loading LOTS of ammo on a single primer size. Mine is set up for small primers and I load 9x19, 9x21, Super, 40 S&W, 5.56 and 6.8 on it. Basically the stuff I shoot a lot.

Bought it before the XL 650 was available. Would probably have done one of those had they been. Given that the money is spent ... never been unhappy with it!

I have to agree they are a TAD faster but the big thing I like is the primer pocket swager. I've almost bought one just for that!!

I was mostly interested in the comment that the 650 was a "medium speed" press.

hornady LNL AP +case feeder and bullet feeder is about the same price as the 650 with a case feeder..

therefore, the hornady lnl can be had faster and cheaper...

and, oh yeah, the lnl ap is cheaper box stock ... with identical features

There are guys that have succesfulyl modified the Hornady bulelt feeder to do lead bullets.
You will spend a bit more for a fully upgraded 650 vs a LNL, but IME, running both, the 650 is mor trouble free; better priming system & case feeder, easier die changes.
I am not sure how one calls a 1000rd/hr setup for a bit more than $1100 medium speed.

You must have lots more luck than I do with my dillon 650. It requires endless adjustment on the powder sensor, endless cleaning because it gets powder all over the turret (unique). I bought it with all the upgrades for $1200.00 but it is not worth it at all!
Worst part is that the thing breaks down on sunday after my CASS shoot and the famed customer service line is not available until monday noon my time.
If I would step in a time machine--- I'd buy a pair of hornadys or even 3 of the Lee progressives! flame off!

I bought my Dillon 650 from a friend who had not used it in several years. I sent it to to Dillon and had it completly rebuilt. I set it up for 40 S&W, loaded maybe 4000 rounds, then changed to 45 ACP and have loaded maybe 6000 rounds. All I do is put primers in the tube, cases in the feeder and powder in the powder measure. I load Unique and yes powder does spill out some, but if you blow it off once and a while it works great. Spray the ram with lube once and a while. I would get another tomorrow if I traded or lost this one. By the way, Dillon charged me a little shop time for the rebuild and shipping, but not anything for the parts replaced.

I find the 650 will crank out the ammo for me if I keep everything full and make it run with a nice smooth rhythm. I had some issues with mine seating primers at one point and after not getting it right myself I just put it in the truck and hauled it down to Dillon. They went through it completely, fixed my issues and told me to have a good day when I picked it up. No charge.

They have rebuilt a 550 for me and given me all sorts of extra parts over the years gratis. Needless to say if Dillon makes something I need and it will do what I want it is going home with me.

I've only had my 650 for about 6m, maybe 4000 rds thru it, also un a 550B, no issues w/ primer seating. I do NOT use the Dillon powder sensor die, too expensive & complicated IMO, so went w/ the simple Hornady COP die, works fine. One should pay attention when they reload & not just pull the handle anyway.
The LNL has it's issues as well, the Dillon case feeder is much better than the Hornady. A Lee progressive, not even if it were free.

maybe I'll pick up a COP die. Ti have a the case feeder does work ok for the most part.

A friend has a lee progressive. His rins flawlessly now after he got the case feed bar properly adjusted.
