308 help/info.
I'm looking for a generic load for a Rem. 7400 in 308. I have loaded some to test which consist of:

150g sierra spitzer boat tail
44.5g IMR 4064
OAL 2.800
Winchester brass
CCI primers

I'm looking for some other recomendations. This is just for whitetail hunting, not target precision shooting. Any input would be appreciated.

What results have you gotten so far?

My loads with IMR 4064 seem to work better with 165/168 gr. bullets.

No results yet. I just loaded 10 rounds this morning. I want to see how these work and go from there. I got my load info from a LEE reloading manual. it states for IMR 4064, 150g jacketed bullet, start grains 41.2 never exceed 46.0.

i have shot 42 grs of 4895 in a every 308 i have evr had with 150 gr bullets it has done good to exceptional in all of them.
i started with a win 100 and then a ruger bolt i used the ammo i had on hand when i got the ruger it held in the inch range.
i tried this same load in my m-14 when i got it and got the same results.
a generic hornady interlock for hunting and fmj's for rocks and paper.
it's done well in two other rifles also that were not mine.
it's not very primer sensitive, and neck tension don't seem to make a whole lot of diff either.
i never messed with the oal either.

My favorite is 45.5 grains of Re15 with an OAL of 2.79", but your mileage may vary. Work up slowly as this is near max in some books.

So, this is your first try with this load and you're starting at 1.5 grains below maximum? While your gun probaby won't blow up doing that you could overshoot the sweet spot where the groups start tightening.

While the Lee manual is OK, I would recommend at least one other manual so you can compare loads.

Looking through an IMR reloaders guide, it gives this info: 308 win 24"bbl 150gr. NOS BT IMR 4064---45.0C grains It does not give a starting grain just what I stated above and not to exceed that. So, could this be considered two reliable sources?

I guess now it's shoot and see what it does at 100 yards.

Randomly picking a Load has about a 10/14-in-360 chance of hitting a good Harmonic Node.

If you just want to send Bullets out the barrel, what you are doing "may" be Safe, or "may not", it depends on your specific Barrel and Cartridge components.

You will eventually find that there are a number of reasons the old Rule of "Develop from Below" is sound. I'd recommend you try the never improved upon Creighton Audette Load Development Method. and once you locate the best Harmonic Node, do some Fine Tuning of the Final Load by using OCL-to-ODL.

It looks a bit complicated, but it will get you to the most accurate loads for your firearm quicker than anything else going.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the info. Hot Core. I just got my new Speer reloading manual #14. under 308 150gr BTSP IMR 4064 start charge charge: 42.0 with a max charge 46.0C.

So, this is my 3rd confirmation that my 308 test load is safe and will work. I guess Lee loads are pretty conservative.

Now, out to the range for some shooting.
