Bob-

Try Varget and Win 748. My rifle loves both of them. I shoot nothing but 168 Sierra MK's thru mine. If you can't find a load using the Sierras and one of those powders, somnething's wrong. Good luck!

If you insist on using 150 grain bullets, try W-748 From 39.5 grains to 50.0 grains and Remington 9-1/2 Primer.

Does it shoot ANY load well, even, gulp, factory ammo?
What rifle is it?
In my experience, a 308 that won't shoot just about anything well has a problem with bedding (usually) or something weird in the barrel (a Ruger 77 I had once) or the sighting system (loose mounts or a bad scope - it happens).

Try a Hornady 150gr bullet and IMR-3031, these were the standard ingredients in my .308 loads for years. I'm trying some varget at the present time and the results are positive so far so you might want to try some of that as well.

46gr Varget, 168gr. Hornady BTs. CCI BR-2 primers. Or the same load using Nosler 168gr. BTs
Works for my Savage [Wink]

I have had good results with IMR3031 and 4064 with 150g bullets in the .308. Actually I prefer 3031. Plateau Hunter

Mine all like RE15. Try working up to 45.5 grains and see what you get.

Second what Jonezy said...

Work carefully up to 46 grains of Varget (MAX load!) with the 168 grain Sierra Matchking. Use CCI BR-2 primers with Varget--that powder likes the mild flame of the BR-2's.

Or work slowly up to 43.6 grains of IMR 4895 with that same bullet, or a good 165 grain hunting bullet...

Best of luck,

Dan

I worked up a ver good load with IMR 3031 and 150 and 147 grain bullets. I have tried other powders over the years but no combo ever beat it, but thats just my rifles.

Bob,
I too like Varget, but I am shooting 180g barnes XLCs currently. I will be moving down to 168s soon. If W748 or varget aren't working also take a look at Hodgdon's BLC-2 it is another ball powder and a favorite of the 308.

I agree with Plateau Hunter..3031 worked great for me! Now,start adjusting the overall length.
Seat the bullets a little further out and try it again! [Big Grin] [Wink]

Bob,
I've had excellent results with 49.0 grains of H-Varget, CCI BR#2 primers and the 150 grain Nosler partition bullets in my Rem. M-700 BDL with a 22" barrel. This load is a max load and should be worked up from below. Varget has given fine accuracy, high velocities and low extreme spread in every cartridge I've used it in. Good luck.

Bob This is a load I have used for over 27 years. It has shoot real good in every 308 I have tried it in form bolt, or M1-A match rifles to regulat sporters, Savage 99's, FN-FAL's or H&K 91's.
This is a mild load but I have killed Antelope as far away as 550 yards [Steyr SSG]
39.5gr.of IMR 3031, Sierra 165 Gameking HPBT, CCI match primer. I used either military cases or Federal Match.
This load works just as well with the Sierra 168 Matchking or the 165gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip and shoots almost as good with the Nosler 165 gr. Partition, when you need a deep penetrating bullet.
This kind of an "old fashioned" load but it has always worked for me.

If you like an accurate powder that meters like none other, then try these loads.
52 gr. H380 125gr. NBT
51 gr. H380 150gr. NBT
50 gr. H380 165gr. NBT

I use Nosler Ballistic Tips, but the 168gr. Matchking shoots in the same group as the 165 gr. BT, as does the 150 Gameking into the 150 gr. BT. These are safe in my M788, reduce down and work up just to be safe, the 52 gr. load just about fills the case, they are all compressed loads.
