Does anyone have chrono data for factory 180 grain 40S&W loads in longer than 4" barrels?

I am considering an extended aftermarket barrel for a .40 Glock and wondering how much real velocity gain the extra inch would gain me. I really want the barrel long so porting it later is an option...but hey, I'll take the velocity too! I know, probably only in the 100fps range...but I'm still curious!

Thanks in advance!

Don`t have a 40 let alone tried cronying any loads in one but, based on the 45acp, 44 mag and 8-9 rifle cartridges I have cronied, I doubt you`ll see much more then +25 fps with a 1" barrel addition.

The only differants that I could see would be 25 to 100fps depending on the powder. WinkThe biggest differants would be the 5.5 would be legal for deer in Wis. as the 4.5 would not.

NO 40 S&W data but I have this on the 45 ACP.

5" M1911 barrel
230 gr Milsurp ball - 835 fps avg

11" M1 barrel
230 gr Milsurp ball (same as above) 841 fps avg

16" M1 barrel
230 gr Milsurp ball (same as above) 844 fps avg

I doubt that you would see too aweful much increase in muzzle velocity in your 40 S&W going from a 4" to a 5" barrel. If you want it for porting get it for that.

25-30 fps, unless you have a "fast" 4 1/2" tube, vs a "slow" 5 1/2", then you might loose a few fps. 1" won't make it a 41 magnum, that's for sure.

Paul,

Those ballistics I posted aren't simulations, they are real and averaged from 50 round strings. Why does the 230gr Milsurp ball 45ACP ammo provide so little increase in muzzle velocity with increasing barrel length?
