Need .458 Lott Brass for upcoming hunt

I should receive my new Lott in the next couple of weeks for my first Africa hunt. I was expecting to have 3-4 months to do a lot of shooting/loading and familiarize myself with the rifle.

I never would have expected that brass is sold out at every store, online or local, that I have checked.

According the MidwayUSA, the only store that would give me an estimated delivery date, Norma brass should be available mid June, and Hornady brass mid July. However, they can't guarantee those dates.

If anybody knows of a store that carries Lott brass, or has enough brass on hand to sell 100-200, please let me know.

THANK YOU!!

I had never heard of that site, or of the availability of factory 2nd's. I tried to call them, but seems they keep regular business hours.

I'll call first thing in the morning.

I buy about 90% of my bullets from them. Never had a issue. Their std shipping charges do make me lean towards larger orders. Roll Eyes

As usual just my $.02

Paul,

Thank you for your comment, I am just a little concerned buying "seconds." They explain on the web page that the components are 100% usable with only slight blemishes.

I hear what you're saying on the shipping charge. By the time all was said and done the price was not much under regular Hornady brass. However, as long as it's usable brass that's well worth it considering my situation!

If you are in a real bind, yo ucan make quite useable 458lott brass from 375h&h. Just fire form them straight & then load em up. Yes, I have done this, just to see if I could. Not my first choice, but it will work. Check here too.

The Hornady cyl brass should work w/ minor trimming. You could also try contacting Hornady direct.

Marc,

The Lott brass is not seconds. If you look at other calibers such as the 280 Ackley you will see both normal brass as well as 2nds. If their listing doesn't include "2nd" then it is first quality. As to the shipping. What I do is buy more. 4 bags cost the same as 1. So consider buying the brass and shopping for either other brass or bullet. You can get both 1st and 2nds for bulets as well.

I've purchased nosler 1st and 2nds 280Ackley as a test. Only difference I found was the 2nds weight range was closer to what I found for normal manufacturers. The 1st quality was like it had been weight sorted.

If head stamp isn't an issue another option is Hornady Belted mag brass. 2.865" long ready to form.

Oh man, you're right!

When I saw "Factory 2nds" I failed to notice the "click here" to get to the seconds, it was just an advertisement banner.

I'm going to call tomorrow morning and see if I can add a couple hundred to my order, that will make it more worthwhile, and give me more flexibility working up loads.

So you must like Nosler brass? I don't know anything about it.

As to the Hornady brass that is not head stamped, I think I understand the theory, but that is not something I have ever done or feel comfortable with. I would be interested in hearing more about the process though.

Again not something I'd know how to do, but isn't it possible to make Lott brass from 375 H&H?

Yes you can make lott from about any full length H&H style mag brass. However with the 375 as well as anything smaller you would need to blow out the shoulder.

To turn turn Belted magnum brass into lott simply lub and run the brass into your chamber and then trim to length. If for some reason your die is too short to allow the 2.86" brass to enter without bumping the top of the die you might have to trim it first. About as easy to form brass as it gets.

No I don't use Nosler brass. I use Norma for the majority of my wildcats. I had heard Norma was making Nosler (poor info I believe) so I bought some to check the capacity against Norma. The capacity is smaller more in line with most other brands so I sold the Nosler brass I had purchased for my test.

From my limited review I feel it is good quality. Like I said the ist I tested were VERY close in weight. Like they had been weight sorted.

Turns out that the Nosler brass was out of stock as well, they just hadn't had a chance to update the website.

I ordered a couple hundred of the Hornady Belted Magnum Basic. Once I started thinking about it I realised it's really not that big of a deal, just trim and size. I'm kind of looking forward to the process now.

The only problem I could see is that I may not be able to get into Zimbabwe unless the brass is stamped, I have an e-mail into my PH. I'm sure it won't be too hard to find somebody who can engrave it.

fredj, I don't know how I missed your post until sometime around lunch today. Turns out that huntingtons is out of Hornady, but has Norma brass on hand, at a very good price at that! But, I had already ordered the Hornady brass.

I knew somebody else who was looking for Lott brass, I'm pretty sure he'll jump on it.

The members of this forum really always come through, Thank You!

From what I was told by the folks at Noslers Pro Shop, the bullets sold as seconds are overuns leftover when they produce ammunition for their own ammo, and also other companies. Have been using their seconds for a few years and cannot tell the difference between 1st's and 2nd's. The 1st's are in boxes, the 2nd's are in bags.

Graf & Sons sells brass, bullets, etc..

Loaded ammo, too, if you want to pay the price!

So does Midway.

Both are good people to deal with.

If you still want some Lott brass let me know. I have 45 pieces of new hornaday 458 lott brass(I also have 5 loaded dummy rounds. Also new brass). I would be willing to trade for some belted mag basic brass.

PM me if interested.

Tenmike:

Loaded ammo is WAY too expensive. Both Midway and Graf are out of .458 Lott brass, the only way to go at the moment is Hornady Belted Magnum Basic.

JBrown:

I have already formed my Hornady Basic brass, took me a while to get it right, but I figured it out with the help of this forum.

I found a place that says they have a bulk box of 250 Hornady .458 Lott brass at a reasonable price if anyone is looking for it. I don't need 250 more or I would buy it myself. Anyone need 125 brass?
