225 gr Barnes Triple Shock 225 gr Accubond ____________________________________ There are those who would misteach us that to stick in a rut is consistency - and a virtue, and that to climb out of the rut is inconsistency - and a vice. - Mark Twain | Chinese Proverb: When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others. ___________________________________

Hardly anybody shoots 275 gr bullets in .338 caliber...just too heavy. So, the upper limit is 250 gr. Barnes suggests you drop down one bullet weight from a cup\lead core bullet when using their solid copper bullets; either the now discontinued X or the new TSX. Thus, I used the 225 for all the big antelopes in Namibia with great success. You will too.

I shoot a .340 Wby and .338 Lapua and have shoot every .338 bullet sold in this country, except Speer. My favorites are the 225 and 240 grain North Forks. The Barnes X, XLC and TSX shoot well with my WBY but do not match the NF's. I have also shot the Swift A-Frame, Nosler Partitions, Nosler Accubonds, Sierra Gamekings (very accurate but lacking in toughness at my speeds). I wouldn't be afraid to use the 240 grain North Fork bullet on anything in the world except elephant, it is a tough son-of-a-gun in my toughness test box, yet still has a great mushroom. Good shooting. phurley

I use 210 gr Nosler Partitions at 3050 fps. There is no need for anything else on elk. This load flattens them !!! Elite Archery and High Country dealer.

Excluding the monometals, I fail to see where any bullet under 225 grains offers an advantage over the magnum 30. I luv the 338 and have used many 200 grain bullets, but not for elk. I long ago came to the conclusion that the 338 is at its best with 250s as it will cleanly dispatch anything you point it at.

There's a heap of difference in elk and buffalo (whether you mean by that bison, cape buff, or the Asian water buffalo you likely have in Aus.) As someone alluded to earlier, the 210 Nosler Partition is a helluva elk bullet; probably every bit as good as the 225 or 250. The 225 Accubond has an incredible ballistic coefficient, and would help you stretch your range on elk-like targets. For "buffalo", I would want to jump up to the 250's for the extra penetration. Charge as much as you like, but you can't better a Nosler Partition. That's not to say the Northswiftbearxlostforks won't do something similar; they just won't do anything better.
