I have a friend who is considering loading his 270 with 90gr speer tnt's for a varmint round. I believe this will be an effective bullet but am concerned about barrel burnout or erosion due to the hot load. Anyone got any experience with this?

If your infering that a full power handload with a 90 gr bullet will burn out a barrel faster than a full power load with say a 130 gr bullet then I would not worry about it.

I don't think the bullet weight is a significant factor in barrel wear.

The Speer #12 has a caution to limit that bullet to 3500 fps by the way.

If long range varmint hunting is contemplated then the 110 VMax has a much higher ballistic coeficient.

I like all the TNT bullets but this 110 V-Max is a better way to go with the .270.

Forget about barrel burnout.....get on with shooting.....criminy!!!

Who says you need a max load for shooting varmints with a 90 gr bullet? Avoiding throat errosion is one reason I tend to shoot loads that are not even near max. Of course, I usually find the most accurate load is well below max as well. Especially, with timy little targets, accuracy is super important. Flat trajectories don't mean much since with varminting, you usualy have plenty of time for good range estimating and hold over.

Put your nose to the grindstone, your belly to the ground, and your shoulder to the wheel. Now try to work in that position!

Another caution about not maxing the BLITZ loads.
I did that with 70 grainers in my 25/06. The accuracy was minute of small water filled ballon at 300 yars...when the bullet got there. Every so often I'd see a gray streak, then no indication of impact anywhere. That was in my early stage of relaoding (pre-chron) so I don't even know how much trouble I was in. Whew!

i recently developed a load for a friend of mine. The rifle was a Remington M710 in .270. I was shooting the 90gr sierra HP's out of it with accuracy of a little under .5 MOA at 100 yds for 3 shots....after 3, the barrell would get so hot that shots would tend to drift a little left. I remember that i was shooting H450 powder in winchester cases, using WIN LR primers. I am unsure of the powder load but i can look at my book and see when i get home. I remember that the powder charge would fill up the case almost completely. If you need any details, let me know

Personally, I could never get them to be very accurate...I am wondering if this had something to do with seating depth.

In any case, I still do use them for my young son w/ SR4759. Makes my somewhat heavy .270 kick about like a .222 . He plinks with it just fine.

Thanks for the info guys, I think we will go with the suggestion of the Vmax in 110 grain. There is not much danger of using max loads on this end as neither myself or my friend are speed freaks, personally, I'd rather hit what I am aiming at than get there first!!

I cant remember the powder charge off the top of my head or the accuracy of the load, but I remember shooting them 90 gr. TnT's out of a 24" barreled 270 Win with Varget, chrony was reading close to 3500 fps...
