Anyone shoot one of the 45 Colt carbines? What are some of the loads/velocities for them. I was thinking about having a 17 or 18" 45C barrel made for dubbing around, since I already load for the ctg.

250 gr XTP 24 gr H110, 1.603", heavy roll crimp into canalure, WLP, 16.25" barrel, Win 94:

1.5" at 50 meters with open sights, which is better than I can see. I need a scope on it.

1536 fps [chrono]

Quickload predicts 1507 fps, 20 kpsi, tweeking Quickload by changing OAL to 1.565" to model heavy crimp, results in 1536 fps and 22 kpsi.

Clark, Have you tried Lil-Gun in your 45 Long Colt? I was researching loads for my Model 97 and the Hornady annual manual has some interesting loads in it for Lil-Gun and the same bullet..........DJ

I have bought 3 45Colt firearms in the last month.

I borrowed a set of dies.

I shot 25.5 gr LIL'GUN 250 gr XTP from my Ruger Blackhawk revolver.

Lots of recoil.

It convinced me I need to take that revolver appart and break the sharp edges on the grips, the frame, and the hammer.

I am going to get a limbsaver for the Winchester.

Recoil feels good in the 1873 SAA design.

The Hornady Data list 25.5grs of Lil-Gun and a 250 XTP at 1410fps in a 7.25" barrel...Wow. I read Layne Simpsons article in Handloader about the Model 97 and he had good luck with 19.5 of H-2400 and the 250 XTP at about 1150 in his short barrel. I shot some of this load today and it was plenty of recoil for this gun. I've got a 480 and 500 to beat myself up with. I've got a bunch of H-2400 so I may just shoot this load for a while even though there are probably much cleaner powders out there..........DJ

24.0 H110, 250 XTP (.452)
NMBH.......1174 fps
Win94......1636
FA M97.....1300

10.0 Unique, 250 XTP (.452)
NMBH........980 fps
Win94......1215

24.0 H110, 255 Keith (Dry Creek, .454)
NMBH.......1084 fps
Win94......1628

21.5 H110, 300g XTP (.452)
NMBH.......1092 fps
Win94......1498
M97........1210

21.5 H110, Sier 300 JSP (.4515)
NMBH.......1042 fps
Win94......1406

21.0g H110, Speer 300PSP (.451)
NMBH........882 fps
Win94......1423

NMBH = Ruger New Model Blackhawk, 4 5/8" bbl, .454 throats
Win94 = Model 94 Trapper, 16" bbl
M97 = Freedom Arms Model 97, 5.5" bbl

All of the above used normal case resizing practices.

More recently I've been experimenting with not expanding the case (use a 45acp or 44 mag expander in the die when belling case mouths) for a tighter grip on the bullet. That's been giveing 50 to 100 fps more velocity for any given XTP/H110 load in the Win94 or the M97.

Haven't been shooting the Blackhawk a lot since getting the M97.
