Hi all. I picked up a 98 krag recently and would like to load up some 220'or 200's. Does anybody here have a pet load. turfman

Lyman #48 has the most recent data for the Krag. Unlike most Krag data, this was shot in a proper pressure barrel. Beware that SAAMI's 40,000 CUP might be a bit stiff for these old guns. The Krag earned a hunting reputation lobbing 220 gn bullets at 2000 fps from their long barrels, and you can duplicate this with very modest pressures using current powders such as 4350 and 4064. Lyman found top performance with Reloder 19.

Have not reloaded for my 98 but it shoots the winchester 180 factory loads very well, 2" at 100 yards using a peep sight

I always check out Steve's Reloading pages before I check my manuals. My actual pet load in the 98 Krag of mine is 30 grains of IMR 4198. Mine is an original carbine length one that was sporterized. It is amazing on how accurate this thing is. I agree with the gentleman above that recommended the 4350 powder or 4064. In loading mine, WORK UP!, but reload data for the 300 Savage is a very good reference point if you don't find a lot on the Krag. MY favorite sources are Lyman 47th Manual and the Hodgdon 26th edition manual. IMR 3031 and IMR 4895 and H 380 get real honorable mention in my book on the Krag also with 200 and 220 grain Round Noses. Cheers and Good shooting seafire
