hammering A shooting partner of mine was giving two of his varmint barreled Mauser actioned rifles their last chance to perform today. I had sold him 8 lbs of my Accurate Data 86. The first , a .260 seemed to improve some but not a lot. It had a long brake on it which I convinced him to unscrew. He stated he had done this before with NO success.

The ac. 86 and removed brake allowed the poorly designed (cartridge).260 to make one 1/2" size ragged hole. The rifle became a keeper and will wear a home made threaded cap in place of the brake clap.

The second was a .22-250 which had always been a disappointment. The ac. 86 and some Berger blems produced really small groups from 37gr. to 40 gr of powder. He had a flyer 1/2" out with 39gr.. Accurate 86 saves another rifle.Again this powder is an over performer. From all the results we see it really has a burning rate slower than the 4831s but I do not recommened anyone starts by using max. charges of published data on 4831 with ac. 86.

There was an unusual happenstance using Ac. 86. With completely identical loads in a hyper accurate .257 Roberts, the only difference being primers, one group was a 5 shot sub 1/2" group and the other was a 3 1/2" group accompanied by a lot more BAAHROOOM. The 1/2" group was made with WLRMs and the 3 1/2" group with CCI magnums. You may draw your own conclusions. beerroger

Yep! Ya screw a cap on the muzzel and you`ll redo what ya did when ya took the brake off. Might not shoot worth a hoot again... You took weight off changing the vibration and now you want to put some back on... Big Grin Big Grin

The cap will only weigh about 1/8 what that brake weighed. Chances are the paramount answer lays some where between the two weights. If the cap screws it up( a bit of a play on words), Joe,we will just remove it. This falls into the nothing ventured nothing gained catagory and not watch out for the buggy man. beerroger

Hey Roger, It is always nice when you can find some Components that shoot that well. And to be able to do it with the less expensive stuff is outstanding.

Maybe you all could locate a Plastic Nut to screw on it. Do you know what the Thread Size is?

My local Ace hardware has a corner of their building dedicated to various kinds of fasteners. I was in there roaming around one rainy day and was looking at all the amazing kinds of fasteners they actually have.

Up walks one of the guys that works there to see if he could help and I told him I was just mesmerized by all the "interesting non-standard hardware" they have. He told me the guys in the store call it "The Magic Corner", because there are so many things there to fix problems people rarely know exist.

So, it wouldn't surprise me if there isn't some kind of "Low mass" Plastic Nut that would do. It would be a real conversation starter too. Big Grin

The fella that owens it will make the threaded cap to be the same diameter as the end of the barrel and blend in to look like part of the barrel. My buddy was going to rebarrel the rifle next week till he used the 86 with the brake off. He is one happy trouper.

I just love those old Hardware stores. The last one like what you discribed that I was in was in Glenn Ellen CA.

Years ago I went around to all of the old Hardware stores and bought most of their ammunition. When 06 ammo was like $9.00/box I was finding it on their shelves for as low as $2.50. A lot of it was over 15 years old for sure. The disappearing mom and pop hardware store is a sad change in the American scene and probably accross the world. Frownerroger

bartsche, Why on earth would you call a cartridge as successful as the 260 "poorly designed" I'm not trying to start a war here it's just that I am curious why you would make a statement like that. Jim

Jim, I "think" weither or not the .260 is a success or not has yet to be determined over time. This has however no bareing on my judgement. I feel this way about all short necked, short throated and short magazined rifle cartridge combinations. Examples of my "comparative" judgement : .243 vs. 6mm [.244], .223 vs. .222, .257 Roberts vs. 25 Souper, .260 vs. 6.5X55or 6.5X57 7-08 vs.7mmX57 and although it is a bit of a stretch the .308 vs. the 8mmX57.If all of the .308 spawned cartridges were on longer actions with corresponding length magazines and the rifles were adequately throated to allow the heaviest bullets in that caliber to be seated out so it didn't infringe on the POWDER ROOM, Than I might not feel as stronly as I do. Being an Engineer all my life I guess I resent good design to be thwarted by marketing people and propagated by media scribes. thumbdown

Are you getting a lot of blue license plates out your way rotflmoroger I'm just evious of where you live.
