going along with my chamber neck size thread, what will outside neck turning accomplish for me provided I don't need to do it, to chamber my reloads??

will it decrease runout in my loaded rounds??

will it help me get a more consistent neck tension??

will it make a noticeable difference in a rifle capable of sub .5 MOA

in times when one needs a rifle, he tends to need it very badly.....PHC

I don't measure run out.
It will give you more consistant neck tension.
It will give you a measurable decrease in group size if you are up to it. Understand that if your rifle shoots .5 consistantly (8 groups out of 10, not just one that you carry around in your wallet) any gains in accuracy will be small but measurable.
When I was shooting a 7-08 in Factory Matches, I shot neck turned brass in the matches but the decrease in group size wasn't dramatic enough that I shot neck turned brass when hunting with the same rifle. It was not a .5" rifle but it was a consistant winner. Seems many of those tack drivers falter on game day. Wink

I neck turned cases for two cartridges,(7MMRM,308) and in both cases groups were BIGGER than before.I think neck turning is applied in special situations,or when useing tight necked benchrest chambers.

Turning for a non custom chambered rifle likely won`t gain you anything.
The neck tension if useing off the shelf dies likely will be less.
The neck will be worked more during the fire/size cycle if you do use a die that will reduce the necks like a std die would a unturned case.
Neck/shoulder donuts are a real possiblity and will need to be watched for.
Runout may or may not be improved.

Then again everything may just click. Runout may be non existant, and groups in the 0.001" range might occure. Cases may last forever, and you could see 200 fps increase in velocity......Ya just don`t know till ya try

Hey cc

What outside neck turner do you have or expect to get? The reason I ask is because there is a possibility that you will develop a do-nut in that chamber and if you do, you will need to plan on how to get rid of it.

Getting rid of the do-nut will help accuracy

As far as neck turning goes, if your brass varies as much as .002" like most brass then it will help in all areas.

If you research the subject and determine exactly what you need and why, there might be some improvement. If you buy a Joe Schmuckerbucks Super Fandangler neck turner garooonteed not to rip, rot, rattle run downhill or smell bad and just start peeling brass all you are going to accomplish is a new brass purchase from Midway or the Emporium of your choice. There can be significant gains but only if done properly and for the right reasons. Jim
