I`m not quite sure if this is the right column , but what the hell !I got a 1894 Winchester , 38-55 , made in 1903 , for Christmas ( what a loving father I have !!)while I cleaned it last week I found that after 2 hours of continous cleaning the patches still came out DIRTY ! And I mean dirty , totally black to be exact ! I started with Sweet`s , but the second patch didn`t show any blue colour , so I switched to whatever I had , IOSSO and JB`s pastes (both on jags and patches wrapped around a brush) I used Kroil , WD-40 and some other cleaning oils in between , even our good and old Ballistol !After an unsuccessful after noon I gave up !The rifle was taken apart (probably the first time after almost 100 years !)completely , so I had all the access with a cleaning rod I needed ! I doubt this , but could it be that I started taken off the surface of the steel ? Or is there just so much dirt or lead or whatever in this bore ? Anybody out there with similar experiences ?What did you do ?

If blackpowder loads were fired in it, the best way is with warm water and Dawn dish detergent...followed by the conventional smokeless powder cleaning methods, and a good drying and oiling.

Clean all of the other cleaning stuff out of it...run a few patches of brake cleaner down the barrel to neutralize it and then soak it overnight in Butch's BoreShine...clean it out and repeat as required. Butch's won't hurt your barrel.

Take good, old Hoppes # 9. It smells, it will take some time, but it wont harm steel. Use brass jags, cotton patches and Hoppes. Let sit in barrel for 24 hrs between each application. Scrub all metal parts with a bristle brush and Hoppes.

It wont take 100 years to clean ;-)

It is actually normal for the IOSSO and JB's bore paste to turn black when running it through the bore even with a clean bore. If your patches with cleaning solvent are coming out clean, and your Sweet's patches aren't blue, it is probably cleaner than you thought.
Just run a few dry patches through to get all the JB's and IOSSO out, then clean with a few patches wet with your choice of solvent (Shooter's Choice, Hoppes, Butches, etc....) and check it out then with a good bore light. - Sheister

Now if you got your rifle broken down, find a stopper that will fit just ahead of the chamber. Now fill the barrel with Hoppe's and leave it be for a week, that should take care of your fouling problem, that is if you have one. This is an old trick from the early part of the last century. The stopper is of the sort you find in a good Chemistry set. I think a good local Drug store could fine one for you in the size you need. In the old Cupro Nickle days, this was standard. Elmer Keith wrote about it, a good thiry or forty years ago about what they did thirty years prior. This may help.

May I suggest that you use some of those cast bullets with JB Bore Paste as bullet lube?
Lapping that barrel may be the path to peace, harmony and serenity, in addition to a clean barrel.
