Don't use the IMR 3031, 4831 works great, 58grs is about max in the 270.

The above is right... IMR 3031 is way too fast for the 270 win. Around 56 to 58 grains of IMR 4831 is where to be. I would try to find Federal 210 primers. Then go to Walmart and buy a box of Winchester Super-X power point 130 grain factory ammo. It will come in a silver box, and cost around 11 dollars. And oh, I'll bet you my pre 64 model 70 270 against a homemade gravel shooter that you won't beat this factory load with any handload you can come up with. (Believe me, I've been trying... ) You'll be doing youself and your rifle quite a disservice by ignoring this advice. The Winchester factory stuff shoots very well in practically every 270 I'm familiar with, one of which is a Ruger 77, which shoots 3/4" at 100 yards with this factory load. Good luck, green 788

The 270 was made for H4831...I use old surplus 4831. I bought 150 lb. stainless steel barrel full of the stuff some 30 years ago..I load Jack O'conners load of 62 grs. of this stuff and it blows bullets out extremely fast. Faster than any of todays powders that I can find..I beliece it was call "4350 Data" at the time and is a 20 MM powder... ------------------

Best load for .270 is as follows: Mannlicher(prof.)24/barrel 62 grain 4831 hodgdon(3220 ft./sec.) Simply the best.!!!! Weidmansheil Martin

Unless varmints are your intended game, I suggest you forget the 130 gr. bullet and develop a load for the 150 gr. I began hunting the .270 with 130s but soon realized there was no compelling reason to do so. At the only ranges it is ballistically superior (under about 300 yds) to the 150gr bullet the gains are negligible on targets the size of deer and antelope. Furthur downrange the 150 is clearly superior. Even at the shorter range where the 130gr shoot "flatter" than the 150s they still lack the penetration offered by the heavy bullet. My .270 was my first deer rifle. I developed one pet load for it with IMR4831 and 150gr Nosler Partitions. Nothing goes in that rifle except for a practice load equivalent.

54gr IMR 4831 and any 150 or 140gr bullet works great in my custom M98 .270 Winny. I have not done any work with lighter bullets...the 140/150's will work on about anything.

Here all the folks are touting H4831 or IMR 4831, and while I must agree that H4831 will give you the fastest .270 Win. velocities, I found that for accuracy loads in this caliber, IMR 4350 was superior, but slower.

I used IMR 4350 for years got good accuracy and good speeds. When the R powder came out I stopped using IMR 4350 in my 270'f for the most part. I now use R22 and it's accurate and the speeds are fantastic. 130 Noz=3300 135 MK=3300 150 Noz=3100 These are in a 25"Lilja 22" Ruger 130=3200 Haven't really worked much with the H4831 s.c. except for in the Ruger with 140 Hornady's. Got good speed and excellent accuracy. Good luck glad to hear you're working with a 06 Improved as I love to call it-Brad just loves that ork ork ork! "GET TO THE HILL" Dog

I used to shoot H4831 in my 270 with no complaints, that is until I tried RE 22..I get the same great accuracy but at 100 fps faster..Is the extra speed neccassary? No,but I like it... My loads are, 61 gr Re 22, 130 gr SST at 3230 fps 59 1/2 gr RE 22, 140 gr SST at 3140 fps Remember, work your way up.....

Mark, that "30-06 Improved" always tears-me-up! Get off-line boy and do your taxes! I agree, RL22 generally gave me around 50 (or a bit more) fps faster than H4831sc with identical accuracy. In my 22" bbl'd M70, I got 3,150 fps with 130's and RL22... 3,090 with H4831sc. I like the "idea" of the Hogdon powder better as it's supposedly "temperature stable" and when working-up loads in the summer and hunting in the fall, that sort of consistancy can possibly mean more than fifty fps... quote: I like 56.5 gr. of RL-22 behind a 150 Hornady Interlock -- very accurate and about 2850 fps. It's got to be pretty temperature stable since we had a 40+ degree temperature change between my last 2 range trips, both this month. Didn't use a chrono the second time but POI was the same and there was no difference in primers, extraction, etc. John

Whoever said that the Win factory stuff would be the best is'nt kidding. It was'nt the powerpoints it was the silvertips for me. It took me almost a year and bunches of different combos to outshoot those silvertips. I finally came up with 60gr h4831sc wlr 130gr speer as my load-de-lux. So what do I do now that I've found my load? Buy several hundred SST's to try out, of course.

Greg, Thanks for backing my statement. I haven't tried the Silvertips as of yet, but I would imagine that the powder and charge that Winchester is using is the same for the Power Points and the Silvertips. I've been wouking with IMR 4350 and IMR 4831. Perhaps I'll try the H4831 and see how it goes. But at 11 dollars a box at Walmart, it's hard to justify the time to reload. I've picked up five boxes, and when I go to the field with the 270, I usually take a box of the Super-X along. Always well under MOA in my old Model 70... green 788

Well, this thread just proves the old addage that every rifle is a rule unto itself. In my .270, the worst (and I do mean WORST) groups I've ever had were with factory Silvertips. The PowerPoints weren't too bad, though. For factory loads, my rig loves Hornady Custom with 140-grain InterLocks. I mean it's almost sick (I hope my wife never finds out I can buy accuracy for $14 a box at the store, vice all that equipment for rolling my own). For handloads, I swear by Re-22 and either Hornady SST's or InterLock's. Luckily, the old .270 is (usually) an easy chambering to make shoot well. Good luck,

Thanks for all the great info. I have loaded some up at 56 grains with the IMR 4831 with 130 grain ballistic tip noslers. I hope to get out to try this new rifle along with these new loads very shortly. Thanks again Tim
