Anyone tryed subsonic loads with 8x57 JS?

My guess is that this would work fine with pistol powders ex. Vhita Vuori N310.

The load should be used for fun with a supressor on paper targets, not hunting.

Shared experience would be appriciatet.

hunter74,

Welcome to the forums.

You can develop sub-sonic loads with practically any pistol powder. Stay away from the very fast ones, though.

We have not tried this particular powder, but have tried UNIQUE, GREEN DOT etc in many different calibers and they all work.

You will find that one particular load works in one rifle, but might give totally different result with another of the same caliber.

I like to use a heavy for caliber cast bullet with red dot. It is easy to get 800 to a 1000 fps with almost any cailber you want.

Fill me in here. "Sub sonic" is about 1,000 fps. Last time I put a chrono on 8mm Mauser it was running about 2,750 fps. What's the motive for cutting velocity back?

The motive would be to shoot the bullet slower than speed of sound when using a silencer/supressor. If the bullet travels faster than speed of sound (aprox. 1000 fps or 330 ms-as we say on these parts)the bullet makes a super-sonic destintive "crack" To make a true silent load when shot with a supressor it is imperative that the bullets travels slower than the speed of sound.

Saeed: Do you have a starting load for a bullet you have loaded subsnic, with Green Dot, in the caliber? I would be much more comfortable with a suggestion where to start than develop a load entirly on mye own. American pistol-powder is not easy to get hands on in this part of the world but I have nearly a full canister.

The rifle is an Oberndorf '43 Mauser M98K with 24" 19mm flutet Lothar Walther barrel, soon to be picked up at my gunsmith.

Hunter74,
try a google search for "cat sneeze" loads
the "Cast Boolits" site has a lot of shooters that go very slow just for fun. I think it works better with cast bullets since they are not as prone to stick in the bore.

OK, that's what I was thinking. Suppressors --

Why not just run with a 45 ACP and load down for a 45 cal, 230 gr. bullet? Then you have a "pistol" (I have carbines in this cal, Uzi machine pistols.) and a big dia. bullet that doesn't need "speed" for expansion because it's alread .451 dia. coming out of the bbl.

Silencers -- what's that all about?

If I'm shooting at something, they're going to hear me coming.

For what it's worth:

I developed a load to fire-lap my 8mm with 160g lead bullets and abrasive compound. CCI 200 primer and 3 grains of Red Dot with a bit of dacron to keep the powder near the primer. Any less than 3 grains of Red Dot and chances are high of the bullet sticking in the barrel. Still makes a pretty good "Pop" for being subsonic. Probably on the order of a 22 short for sound level.

With 6 grains of Unique, Red Dot, or Bullseye, it will right at the threshold of sub sonic.

I suggest you start off with about 8 grains, and see what you get. You can then go either up or down, as required.

It is easier to work with heavier bullets for this.

I'll try with 8-9gr N310 or Green Dot with 185gr Rem Core Locked. The real danger is to set the bullet in the barrel, as I see it when the chamber pressure dosen't get real hi with these loads.

I've simulated some loads in Quick Load and the pressure never gets over 20 000 psi with loads from 5-10 gr. In 3-4 weeks when I get my rifle back I'll post my field testing results.

Thank you all for help, this forum is a true source of knowledge!

I forgot to mention your rate of twist can be a factor with slow loads. A relatively long heavy bullet at very low velocity may key hole.
