This is probably a dumb newbe question, but I loaded a bunch of 44 rem mag for my revolver using 19 grains of Win 296 and CCI large pistol primers, and hornady 300 gr XTP bullets. The recipe in the hornady book said to use WLP primers, and the books that use CCI primers with Win 296 said to use the CCI magnum large pistol primers. Am I ok with the CCI non magnum primers for this load? Does it make that much of a difference with magnum and nonmagnum primers for my revolver and win 296 powder?

Since you're using large pistol instead of large pistol magnum primers there should be no problem with excess pressure. As always, start low and work up. You may get better accuracy with magnum primers.

No problem with excess pressure using standard primers, but W296 and H110 (same stuff) want hot primers. Winchester primers are hotter than CCI primers. I'm sure you're aware of the hazards posed by reduced loads when using these powders. .

I would not be afraid of shooting those loads, but I would not expect them to be as accurate as ones that were loaded with the correct (anyone's mag pistol) primers. If the enemy is in range, so are you. - Infantry manual

That's what I wanted to hear. I loaded 50 of them and I didn't want to have to waste them, and it took me about 100 wacks with the bullet puller thingy to remove one of the bullets that I accidentally seated way too deep. One more question. Would this bullet be a good elk bullet? It is 300 grains, but those bullets are pretty cheap compared to the partitions and the barnes bullets. Do you think they would hold together or would you choose a different bullet? And if so, which bullet for the 44 mag pistol 7.5 inch barrel. Thanks.
