Can anyone tell me an estimate of the force required to remove the primer from spent brass?

I am thinking about making a separate, spring loaded tool to remove the primers.

That is a lot less than I thought it would be. I could easily do that with a small spring.

2 or 3 pounds at the end of the handle is allot more with the leverage of the press.

The leverage ratio of the press depends on geometry of the press and where the primer is encountered in the stroke of the press.

Lee and others make depriming dies that are really inexpensive. The depriming itself takes very little pressure on the press handle.

Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Lee makes the longest lasting depriming die, if the pin will fit through the flash hole.
