Okay, time for me to ask for help...

A friend just sent me a perfectly great early Ruger (tang safety, around 1973) M-77 short action.

Originally it was saddled with a shot-out .220 Swift barrel.

I am not looking for a replacement barrel, a real Ruger take-off, in excellent condition.

Would really like a heavy .308 Winchester, but will settle for a standard .308 Winchester.

I have hit all the auction sites and parts houses and they have nothing.

Ruger will not sell me a barrel, even though I have an FFL and two vaults full of Rugers!

So...if you have one of these barrels, or know of someone who has one...PLEASE email me and give me the details.

If .308 is not available, let me know what you do have.

Thanks,
Steve

Hey Steve,
Have you called any of the "re-barrelers"?
I will ask HART for you when I call them. (1/4/06) (I just had them do a job on a M77II from 7mmM to 300WM and got the call today its done)
I will see what they do with the take offs and ask if they have anything that may help you out. If they can help I will send you a note.

Smedley

I haven't gotten around to asking the "re-barrelers" yet. I did check out all their sites, and was amazed at what it would cost to have them rebarrel my Ruger action!

$800 seems to be the going price for a barrel (chrome moly), have it fitted to the action and have the action trued. Oh, and have the barrel blued.

Hell, I can buy a complete new Ruger 77 for around $400!

Appreciate your help...

Would you consider having the original barrel rebored and rechambered to 308?

for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

Call up Ruger and ask for the number of the outside smith that they send work to for customers. Just say that you want a barrel recrowned or shortened.

Then ask him to get you a 308 barrel.

Just send it back to Ruger explaining that you want a new barrel put on it. I have done that several times in the past. They were very quick and it was done at a very reasonable price also. They usually keep a number of older model parts around so this will be limited to stock on hand. Due to this, you may have to be flexible as to the calibers they can offer you.

Cheers,

Rich

Will this fit your need?

Not really, but thanks for looking.

I want a chrome moly barrel, not stainless. And the asking price is way too high for a take-off Ruger barrel. I believe the current cost of a new Ruger barrel is around $89.

Ruger does replace barrels fairly cheaply - $200? - but they'll only replace the same caliber.

Don't have a 308, but I will try to look tonight, I may have a 243 standard barrel.

The reason to call re-barrel folks is to get a take-off, not a new barrel. I know the folks at Hill Country have some every so often. They sent me a shot out 308 barrel that I cut up and made a putter from. Big Grin

I would hope Ruger could find the benefit of providing customer's with what they want , not the other way around . What would Bill think ? Good Luck on finding what you need , as you have always helped others with their issues .

I talked to Mike at Ruger again today. They are firm in that they will only replace a barrel with the same one that the firearm left the factory with.

So, if I want another .220 Swift, they will be glad to do it for a very good price. (However, they also want to re-blue the receiver, and I don't want that, I like the purple...)

Just out of curiosity, did they give a reason for not wanting to rebarrel in your specified caliber?

I would go to sst rifleroom website, look up all the smiths and start calling for any of the bbls they took off. Surely someone would send you one for much less than $50.

You could always get a Douglass bbl for a decent price.

It ain't what you're looking for but thought I'd post the info anyway.

Found a 16 1/2" SS .308 cal take-off from a Ruger Frontier rifle for $40. PM if you'd like me to put you in touch w/ the source.

Steve: Just for the heck of it I looked at Hoosier Gun Works on the internet and saw a Ruger Model 77 barrel in 7x57mm for $45. There's a .25/05 there too, but that would be totally too long for your action. The phone number is 1-270-749-2109. That's the only take off I've seen lately. Have a tolerable day, but only if you want to have one. Tom Purdom

Steve-

Somehow I can't PM you.

I did find a 19" .308 Win barrel today, pretty light contour, blued.

PM me if you can.
