<El Viejo>5.56mm Target Load
I just got my first box of Hornady 68 gr match hptbt bullets and I need some suggestions for the best velocity for accuracy.
Normally I would work up this load myself and test the different charge weights for accuracy at the range, but the match is this Saturday, and that is also the first day the range is open. Unfortunately, the match starts at 1pm and I will not have time to make a few runs of test loads, pick the best one and load the 60 rounds I need for the match. I will have to take my best guess as to the most accurate load and then shoot the match. By next match, I will have all of the bugs worked out, but right now, I could use a jump start.
I am shooting a Rock River CAR with a 16" barrel and a 1 in 9 twist.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

<Kerry.S>I used this load with sierra, nosler and hornady bullets from 62 to 69 grains with little variation in groups. 24.5 grains of IMR 4895 gave me 2850-2900 fps out of a 20" barrel with 1/2 moa groups
AR-15
should work but the load was near max

andrew375A load recommended in an article in precision shooting for any bullet from 68 to 80 gr. is to fill the case with VV N140 (26-27gr.) and push the bullet in. It works! This came from a bunch of 1000 yd. shooters btw. You might find N140 a bit slow for the light bullet in a short barrel but it is safe, accurate and not far behind other powders in achieving top velocity.

J.W. BluteThe 4895 load mentioned earlier is usually a good bet. Also, 26.5 gr of Varget with a 68 - 70 gr bullet is a pretty standard load for High Power Service Rifle shooters. If you don't have Varget then try Re-15, it's burn characteristics are very close to Varget.

<Gary Rihn>I shoot 24.5 grs of Varget behind Sierra 69's out of my Service Rifle.

<El Viejo>Thank you for the repsponses. I take it that I should try to load for the higher end of the velocity table while staying within safe charge limits?
Unfortunately, the only powder I have on hand is WC844, I will try to acquire some of the others.
Thanks again for the pointers!

Any chance of a copy of that article?
