It is better to BUMP UP with a smaller bullet to the larger size. I can tell you that.

However it has been done the other way and you could easily do it yourself.

But I don't recommend it even though I have done it.

BUMP UP - DON'T SWAGE DOWN

But if you care to ignore that here is how it went...

About thirty years ago sizing down .451" .45 ACP standard 230 grain round nose jacketed "hardball" to .429" to use in a .44 Magnum for steel falling plates.

Not just me but a lot of people both here in Britain and of course in USA.

FMJ .44 Magnum bullets being unheard of then in the 1980s.

How?

Simply run them through a standard lead bullet sizing die of the required size mounted in a lubrisizer press of the RCBS Lubrisizer type.

Don't use the earlier linkage type Lyman 450 it is too weak.

It wasn't difficult but took a good bit of physical effort. As you reduction isn't so great it would no doubt take less.

BUT....the reason it isn't recommended is that it is thought that the copper jacket may spring back as it is elastic form the lead core.

That is why it is advised to BUMP UP and not swage down jacketed bullets. But that is how it was done in the singular circumstance of reducing .45 ACP "hardball" for use in the .44 Magnum.

So I would advise bump up .323" to .325" and bump up .357" to .366".

Before I ran into a real good deal on 416 cal bullets I swaged down 429 300gr pistol bullets to 416 in one pass.

Using a Lee push through sizer they worked well.

Takes a good strong press.

I've bumped lots of bullets up and sized lots of bullets down on my RCBS A-3 press. Can't say that either method proved significantly superior in results on targets shot.
