HELP!! I am having trouble with reloading my 458 Lott (Ruger # 1). I have a Hornady Classic single stage press, Hornady dies, Hornady brass and bullets. I set up my dies according to the specs in the die manual. The problem I am having is when I seat the bullet there is a bulge on one side of the case neck wall. What is causing this bulge and what can I do to correct the issue? As a side note...... After I resize the case it will chamber into my gun normally (before seating bullet), but after I seat the bullet (with the bulge) it will not chamber all the way. I cannot figure out how to upload a picture to this post so here is a link to a Google image of a similar example. [I would be glad to email or text pictures to anyone that could help.] Thanks - Andy I have run into that as well when loading long cases with long bullets. I think what is happening is that the bullet is starting in the case mouth a little crooked and the seat die has enough room in it that the off angle is not being corrected. In essence, it is relying on the brass to keep the bullet aligned. First thing I would try is to anneal your case mouths back to where the bottom of the bullet will be so the brass is pliable enough to allow a smooth insertion of the bullet. Second, bell your case mouths a little more than usual so the bullet sits as squarely in the case as possible before it is pressed up into the die. As for the loaded rounds, see if you can press them into the FLS die with the pin out to see if this will square things up enough to chamber.

What you're seeing is normal. The case is tapered, the bullet is straight, one side of ALL brass, including necks, is ALWAYS thinner. It is this side that bulges. Even factory ammo has this bulge. I'm using Hornady brass too, watch you use as little flare as possible, I had split necks on a few from too much flare on firing. Don't worry about the bulge, it disappears when you fire the brass Do not do as above says, you will have undersized bullets rattling down your bore. NEVER run loaded ammo in a FL die, it will size it too small, including the bullet. Cheers.

"Don't worry about the bulge, it disappears when you fire the brass...." 416RigbyHunter, one of the problems that the bulge is causing is the bullet will not chamber all the way and I do not want to force it because it will not eject. Here is picture showing what I'm referring to..... https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic...l4FZHebEhgZ-d7KJjbPw

By gently resizing your cases you will NOT have undersized bullets rattling down your bore! No way that recentering your brass will possibly size down a fmj Hornady bullet. Do not fls with great pressure. You just need to realign the bullet in relation to the base of the cartridge. You won't be able to fully resize the cases with the bullet seated anyway - they won't go in that far. I have done just this with 458 Lott and 450NE rounds.

I'm gonna guess that your seating die is not set up correctly and the die is hitting the case mouth before the bullet is fully seated. Try this: take an uncharged but resized case and cycle it through the bullet seating motion (without the bullet) and see if it bulges the case. If so, back the die out a turn or so and adjuster the seater stem. Or back the seater way out and back the die out quite a ways. Run a resized case into the die and turn it down until it hits the case mouth. Then back it off a couple of turns. Then you can seat your bullet by adjusting the seater. Aim for the exit hole

I do not know your issue. The chamber has ample room for the bullet/case to be a non issue. I would like you to try this, take one of your loaded rounds, chamber it by hand, then back it out, turn it a 1/4 turn and re-chamber, do this for 1 full turn. Any difference to the depth? If you're crimping too much, a bulge can develop below the crimp, if the bulge is where the bullet stops then this is normal. My rifle has ample room for the bulge. A picture of the ACTUAL problem will help. Cheers.

If the bulge is only on one side/at one point then I am inclined to think the same as "wasbeeman". Also see if you can borrow another set of dies, different manufacturer, and see if you still have the same problem.

4 things to try as this is common with straight wall tapered cases. 1) make sure the seating plug of your seating die fits the ogive of the bullet you are using...if not...get one made that does. 2) make sure you are belling the case mouth enough that the cut margin of the case is not catching on the base of the bullet. 3) lube inside necks...I use Lee Case lube applied with a bore-mop 4) turn the case a 1/4 turn every little bit as the bullet seats. I load a lot of .458 WM with North Fork flat point solids. In the old design with virtually no ogive...this was sometimes very hard to prevent in some lots of brass. The inside neck lube helped me the most. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Lane Easter, DVM A born Texan has instilled in his system a mind-set of no retreat or no surrender. You will see less of a bulge with Norma brass and when using solids instead of softs. It makes no difference with accuracy.I had great accuracy with slightly bulged Hornady cases. If you are not able to chamber a round then we are not talking about the same bulge.Go easy on the crimping and throw the expander plug away you don't need it.

That is A typical with the 458 and the 458 Lott. Its nothing more than worrisome as a matter of fact..Several factors can cause that, but in your case it can be the chamber or the case itself as stated in the above posts..It was one of the reasons some folks liked the other 45 calibers of like ballistics. You will get the same bulge when reloading for the 500NE.Less of a bulge when using Norma cases and solids instead of softs.
