My favorite topic - a 270 with 160 NP. I have a custom 98 270 made in 1948 according to a stamp on the barrel (24") - found this rifle at a gun shop this winter and spent a considerable amount of time getting it in shape - it had the most beautiful stock I have seen in a long time - so I refinished it, reblued it, glass bedded the actions and the forend tip (tried free floating first) and stuck on a new K4 with Leupold mounts. With RL22 and 55 gr I get 2886 fps with the 160. Group size is basically just a three shot clover leaf. Whats nice is this load shoots to the same place as 56 gr and a 150 (NBT) for 2930 fps an 57.5 gr with a 130(NBT and Sierra) for 3140 fps. Tried numerous loads with SC4831 and all three bullet weights plus 140 gr Hornady's but I get the best velocity and group size with RL22. I use WLR rifle primer. Again, my rifle (which will not take some common listed max loads of SC4831 or RL22) - so use standard reloading practices when working up your loads - I think that the 160 NP is the only other semi-spitzer in the Nosler line with the exception of a 220 gr 30 cal. Years ago they had a 25 cal 117 gr and 7mm 175 gr that I used a lot and swore by. With a BC of .434 this bullet should fly flat and hit hard. Go have some fun | |||
