I recently brought my sportorized 1903 Springfield out of 25 year storage and decided to bust a few caps. I did not remember the recoil that the 30-06 has. I loaded about 30 rounds using 44 grains of 4895, (which was the lightest load for this powder in the book), and some 30 year old 170 gov. boattail bullets. This load kicked the crap out of me.
Does anyone know how light I can load IMR 4895. I plan to lighten the bullet to about 150 grains also.. reddman@brmemc.net

Here is a light load I have used in 30-06 and .308Win:

Powder: Green Dot, 15 grains
Bullet: 110gr Speer HP varminter
Velocity: 2030 fps
Accuracy: 2.0 out to 200 yards

A real fun little load, low pressure, VERY light recoil. .30 Carbine performance.

Reddman,

I have a recipe from Hornady 3rd Ed.

168 gr. BTHP for Hodgdon 4895 at 42.1 gr to achieve 2.5K fps.

168 gr. BTHP for IMR-4895 at 43.0 to achieve 2444 fps.

You did not specify whether or not it was IMR or Hodgdon....

My personal favorite load is IMR-4350 at 53 gr. (for same bullet) and find it shootable all day long...
